In Bacon's time, it was commonly believed that the continent of America was the actual site of ancient Atlantis. Not symbolically. Not metaphorically. But literally. In his story, Bacon writes:

"And the great Atlantis (that you call America) ... Of all this there is with you sparing memory, or none; but we have large knowledge thereof." (The New Atlantis, by Sir Francis Bacon; Francis Bacon: The Major Works, OxfordWorld's Classics, pg. 467).

It must be remembered that Bacon did not play a lone hand; he was the head of a secret society including in its membership the most brilliant intellectuals of his day.
