We are nowhere near ready.
Our thrust is continuing on without electricity, or fuel of any kind. We were on a four year time table, cut short by three years. When we became aware that it was happening NOW rather than later we started cherry picking through our list to get as ready as we can be with what we already have put in place. But that only goes so far. We have wood but no wood stove. When the propane and kerosene is gone we'll be cooking using fire pit and dutch oven and going to bed with the sun... We've got seeds and hand tools but no draught animals, nor do we have the means to feed them if we had them. Our raised bed gardens are not in. It would be daunting to subsistence garden in this rocky soil. A gasoline roto tiller is no match. It needs a backhoe. There is a reason this particular patch of ground was never tilled. The old farmers were very wise. We can make do for several years without electric power or fuel of any kind with what we have on hand. This will buy time to come up with other solutions. Without other solutions it starts to look pretty bleak in the long term. It all depends on how bad and how soon the cards are dealt to us. We are flexible and able to adapt. We just need a bit of wiggle room to make it happen. Last edited by Baggywrinkle; 09-24-2008 at 04:36 PM. |

I am almost doing nothing.
For some weeks now, everytime I get some money out of the wall, I get some more than needed. I store it here, so I have some cash in the house. If a rush on the banks happens, I won't have to stand in the row. But will my money have any value? Does it change anything? Not always, but often, when I go to the shop, I buy some more than I need. So food provision starts to pile up a little bit. So far maybe I can survive one week on it. ![]() It seems clear, I am not that convinced. Maybe I belong to that large group of people, still asleep, or not really believing what is prophecized. Mostly I just go on with my life as if there is nothing to worry about. You know. At the first gulf war, in Israel, there were people thinking their end of time was near. So in their shelters, underground, the best thing they could come up with, was to have orgies. The same thing happened in Hitlers bunker, in the last days of WWII. Everyone was doing it with everyone. Wine, beer ... were drunk by the slots (correct english?) Now, these people certainly didn't think it was necessary to get ready. To prepare. They just waited for what was coming in some sort of fatalistic way. The Israelites tought the end was near but they were wrong. The nazist tought the end was near and for them, it was right. It looks like you do nothing or little as long your are not convinced. And then, when you are convinced, you can go many ways. Try to survive, hope to survive, or like the above, just go crazy. |

Well we are stuck in Holland, 5 metres below sea level, we want to move to France but our financial situation at the moment renders that idea impossible.
I have been following this stuff for more than two years now and although it looks pretty grim, things happen surprisingly different than you expect them too, I'm hoping this crisis will ride it self out! |

Well like a few of you i have been doing the necessary things, one thing that people really need to understand is if you are on regular medication this could prove real problems for some.
I know if you are on repeat prescriptions you may be able to get a months supply ahead but what happens then? ![]() |

I'd suggest that everyone google (or scroogle) 'permaculture' and 'your home town or locale' and take an introductory course. As a caveat, you'll hear a lot of rubbish about 'global warming' and 'peak oil' and other 'green' nonsense. But the design concepts are simply awesome...And knowing more gardeners in your area is always good for seed swaps, cuttings etc.
