I personally could not imagine the American people accepting the introduction of the long-anticipated "Amero". Europe's economy is in shambles as well, lending no credence to the idea that a universal currency could help stabalized the economic free-fall currently taking place.
National identity is extremely important to American citizens, and the elimination of the US dollar would be too abrupt a change for the average joe to swallow.
