A humpback whale has been spotted in New York Harbour.

Coast guards have monitored the whale's movements, to make sure it doesn't stray into shipping lanes.

New York - A whale believed to be a humpback entered New York harbour on Thursday, swimming slowly along the southeastern shore of the city, the US Coast Guard said.

The whale, measuring a relatively small 6-7m, was spotted near the Verrazano Bridge, which links Brooklyn and Staten Island.

"The Coast Guard is out there providing a safety zone to ensure the whale's safety and that of the vessels. It's fairly close to the shipping channel," Coast Guard spokesperson Annie Berlin said.

NY1 television showed aerial footage of the mammal gently surfacing and diving under the busy bridge. It was reported to be heading in the direction of Coney Island, site of a famous amusement park
