08 Jan 2009.

Pheasants, one of the most beautiful pet birds in the world, are of Chinese origin. It has genetic links to the Indian Peafowl. More than a dozen pheasants belonging to different varieties will be showcased.

The Golden Pheasant, Japanese Ring Neck, Lady Amherst, Silver Pheasant etc are a feast to the eyes of onlookers. The male pheasants are more beautiful than the females. Pheasants adorn the courtyards of many affluent people in cities such as Hyderabad and Delhi.

It takes two years for the bird to become mature. On maturing, it will attain brilliant colour patterns on its tail that would grow to a length of around 1 metre. On an average the bird lays 30 eggs a year.

Since pheasants do not have the patience to sit brooding over the eggs, the keepers depend on incubators to hatch the eggs. It takes around 28 days for hatching. A pair of pheasants carry a price tag of Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 in the market. The lady Amherst would fetch around Rs 25,000.

The pheasants are vegetarians and their staple foods include grapes, oranges and vegetables. It has a life span of 25 years. The most significant feature of pheasants is their ability to sense the most minutest movements in nature. In view of its faculty in sensing earthquakes and tsunamis, geologists install micro-chips on its heads to predict tsunamis and earthquakes.

Dr D.Shine Kumar , PRO of the State Animal Husbandry Department said that they would bring a dozen pheasants from Thammanam in Kochi. Shameer of Olyparampil, Thammanam, is the pride owner of the birds.

Jeeva 09, to be held on the Sree Vidyadhiraja College compound will be inaugurated by Animal Husbandry Minister C.Divakaran at 5 p.m. on January 9. Fisheries Minister S.Sarma will inaugurate the pavilions. Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran will inaugurate the State-level schemes.
