Crist confirms 2 FL swine flu cases in Broward, Lee

A Broward County teen and a boy from Lee County are the first two confirmed victims of swine flu in Florida, according to Gov. Charlie Crist.

The Broward victim is a 17-year-old female student of Hallandale High School and the boy is a Spring Creek Elementary School student.

Crist, who has assured the public the state is ready to manage an outbreak, declared a public health emergency Friday and directed state Surgeon General Ana Viamonte Ros to help manage the emerging crisis. He said little else.Dr. Viamonte Ros said the two cases are likely not isolated and that more will soon be reported.

"We cannot predict the course of this outbreak, how it will affect our state. We do expect to see more cases in the coming days and weeks,'' she said.

Viamonte Ros urged people to wash their hands, avoid coughing in their hands and to stay home if they feel sick. She said people shouldn't take anti-viral drugs unless prescribed them by a physician, and said physicians shouldn't prescribe them unless a person is sick. She said the state has numerous monitoring stations and is in contact with physicians and pharmacies to help alert the state to any potential problems.

Viamonte Ros said the state will pull through, but she left no doubt about the serious challenge the state faces.

"As we have seen with many other incidents in Florida -- whether they be anthrax, floods, wildfires or hurricanes --Floridians are resilient people and Florida has a very resilient response system,'' she said.

I'm following this story since October 27th when 7 victims from an unknown flu-like symptoms disease showed up in my RSS Reader:

3 days later the alternative medias were picking up on this and now I follow the blog about it.

As far as I can remember, there was no vaccination campaign in Ukraine: they are broke. They got free vaccines from other countries recently because of this outbreak.

I believe this was entirely due to the spraying of chemicals in their skies that brought this on.

Hi everybody...interesting thread...

Saw this thread and thought I would post what happened today...

I don't like posting this sort of stuff but feel we all need to know what is going on...

A Customer came in (workplace) to conclude a deal and said that she was feeling very much under the weather...anyway I asked what was what and she said that she was feeling a bit rough the other day and went to the doctors for advise...the doctor recommended the vaccine without any full diagnosis!!!

She took the vaccine and since has felt even more unwell...also she is pregnant!!!

I asked politely to keep me informed how she feels and if she gets worse...

What could I say...

An acquaintance of mine (that I met at an expansions conference in early '08) died last Friday from H1N1 "treatment"/pneumonia.

I rec'd a short email from his best friend, apparently he'd gone to the hospital last week because he was sick, was diagnosed w/H1N1 and treated for it and died quickly as a result, died Friday! His friend stated to me that he, in fact, had pneumonia.

I don't know what he was treated with but I have heard that only two labs (Canada & Georgia) can confirm via blood if one does have H1N1, so being diagnosed was a sujective evaluation by a doctor in this case.

I apologize if I've posted this in the wrong thread, I don't have a link to post. But I met this person and he was 52, healthy & very intelligent. Very puzzling case to me, this, tragic!~

My daughter works for a health care facility.

Any death related to pnuemonia will be treated as one from H1N1

When she had to call the school on her son they told her they were only reporting cases of H1N1 if a cough was involved. hmmmm

I just accepted a job at a hospital and they want to check on my immunization record.

Hmm. I wonder if they plan on forcing me to get the vaccine or if they'll give me a choice?

Also, my friends have 2 young sons that both have the swine flu and one has asthma and it hit him very hard. I think they may have been immunized against it. Not sure.
