The Foxfire Books are excellent in recording the complete self sufficiency of Appalachian native people. My Great Grandmother is in one of the Foxfire Books that is about herbal medicine and faith healing. I would caution though that few would understand how to live in the fashion of the traditional Highlanders because it takes at least a basic understanding of very old methods of homesteading and living based from old Irish and Scottish heritage. These are my people and I returned back to these hills over a year ago for the very reasons that are in this thread. I have a thread titled Deep in Foxfire Hollow.
I read with great interest Doodah’s post #433. We too experienced the same storm and electrical failure well over two weeks ago. We got our electrical service back up just yesterday.
Here in my small mountain town there were absolutely NO “haves or have not’s”. Within the hour of the storm passing I heard chainsaws and atv’s power up all through the ridges and hollows. By nightfall we had all the elderly and disabled in the small elementary school with several large diesel generators “borrowed” from the coal mines. We set up freezers for people to bring their food so it wouldn’t spoil and everyone chipped in prepping food about to spoil and fresh garden produce either cooking for the many mouths to feed or to can and preserve. There was a medical area to care for our elderly and many injuries and cuts clearing the downed trees and debris. The young people rode horses, motorcycles and atv’s from hollow to hollow and ridge to ridge checking on the folks who chose or needed to stay in their homes. The children fished and swam in the river the flows by the school.
One evening as we sat around the fire after a pig roast dinner with sweet corn from the gardens and blackberry cobbler the children picked that day, with many guitars, banjos and fiddles playing around me and homemade wine and 'stronger stuff' I had the thought that I wouldn’t really care if the power ever came back on and I have no doubt that the people around me were thinking the same thing.
I also had the thought that in that situation my little mountain community were the people who would be considered the Haves and those just an hour away struggling in their fancy neighborhoods carefully hiding their resources and defiantly refusing to share and work together were very sad and sadly unaware that what they were experiencing is only a precursor to very turbulent and difficult times just around the corner.
I want to post later on my thoughts that will not leave my mind about Bill’s statement on the controllers preserving the genome . . . . that statement keeps rolling through my mind and nibbling around a personal revelation.

The solar wind, because it is an extended ionized gas of very high electrical conductivity, drags some magnetic flux out of the Sun, thereby filling the heliosphere with the weak interplanetary magnetic field. Magnetic reconnection - the merging of oppositely-directed magnetic fields such that they become connected to each other - between the interplanetary field and the Earth's magnetic field, allows energy from the solar wind to enter the near-Earth environment. The Sun's properties, such as its luminosity, are related to its magnetic field, though the connections are as yet not well understood. Moreover, changes in the heliospheric magnetic field have been linked with changes in total cloud cover over the Earth, which may influence global climate change. Here we report that the measurements of the near-Earth interplanetary magnetic field reveal that the total magnetic field leaving the sun has risen by a factor 1.4 since 1964. Using surrogate interplanetary measurements, we find that the rise since 1901 is by a factor of 2.3. This change may be related to chaotic changes in the dynamo that generates the solar magnetic field. We do not yet know quantitatively how such changes will influence the global environment.

Anthony L. Peratt is a world leading research scientist on high energy Plasma Discharges. Perhaps the leading authority and some Plasma characteristics have been named as Peratt Instabilities. He has carried out field research on Petroglyphs (rock art carved into rocks) after noticing the similarity between high energy plasma discharges and the images recorded in rock art and cave drawings by nations all over the world. This is easy to test - look at images of petroglyphs (rock art carved into stone). Wikipedia has some good examples of the stick man like Squatter Man. From the America's, to Australia to Europe everyone saw the same thing in the skies.

As the bomb explodes it emits a powerful wave of gamma rays. As this energy release hits the upper atmosphere it creates an electrical disturbance known as the Compton Effect. The intensity is magnified. View it as a small pebble rolling down a slope, hitting a larger one, setting that in motion, until finally you have an avalanche.
At the speed of light this disturbance races to the earth surface. It is not something you can see or hear, in the same way you don't feel the electrical disturbance in the atmosphere during a large solar storm.
For all electrical systems though, it is deadly. As ham operators and potential emergency responders this represents a huge threat for our mission as communicators in a time of emergency. Any solid state radio hooked to an antenna or even to the AC power line would most likely be fried. This EMP effect would also disable all telephone systems, cell phones, and the entire electricity power grid system. Almost all vehicles made since 1980 would suffer damage to the electrical system and computer control vehicle engine systems. Even more dire, any civilian airplane in the air at the time of the EMP wave would most likely crash due to loss of all electrical control systems.
One second after such an attack, we as a country would be set back to conditions similar to the mid 1850's in a society not able to cope without modern support systems.
Unlike a lightning strike, or other power surge, an EMP surge is “front loaded.” Meaning it doesn't do a build up for a couple of micro-seconds, allowing enough time for the circuit breaker to “read” that trouble is on the way and shut down. It comes instead like a wall of energy, without any advance wave building up as a warning. It therefore slams through nearly all commercial and even military surge protectors already in place, and is past the “safety barrier” and into the delicate electronics before the system has time to react.
Such an attack could be carried out fairly easy by a rogue nation or terrorist group with just two or three very small nuclear warheads exploded above our atmosphere by a small rocket such as North Korea and Iran currently have. The threat is very real and could be carried out by these groups now or in the near future. We as a country are not prepared for this type of attack. Our military and some government sites are hardened for this but the civilian side of life, for the most part, is totally unprotected for this.
What can we do as individuals to protect ourselves and families and also as ham operators our equipment and ability to get on the air to handle emergency communications? I have been researching the Internet for information on EMP and steps you can take to protect yourself and electronic equipment. I have also consulted with several hams, who are retired military and industry experts who have done extensive professional study of EMP. They suggest we store our main radio, or a backup radio, in a metal box, to protect the circuits from an EMP blast. Any modern radio hooked to an antenna and plugged into a power supply will probably not survive the attack even if you have lightening protection on your station already. Interestingly, any older rig with tubes instead of modern solid state would most likely survive if not connected to an antenna or AC power. A simple thing called a “Faraday Cage” is nearly a fool proof protector of electronics from an EMP. Your metal box or screen could be as simple as a metal filing cabinet or box or small wire screen grounded.
We will need alternative power, as the AC will be out for a very long time. Batteries with recharge ability would do. Solar panels to recharge 12 volt batteries will do fine. Small gas generators will do but you must protect them from EMP if they have any computer or electronic control circuits built in them.
You should prepare to survive without any additional food or water sources from existing normal supplies. Also complete cut off of all medically supplies. There will be no grocery store or pharmacy to re-supply you for a very long time after such an attack.
I am not writing this to scare you but to inform you of the possibility of such an event that our country is wide open to an attack. I encourage you to research this topic on your own.
