US Acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland was unhappy with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s plan to fire General Valery Zaluzhny and offered to “smooth over” the differences between the two, The Times reported on Friday.

Zelensky fired Zaluzhny as commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces on Thursday. Nuland was in Kiev at the end of January, as rumors of Zaluzhny’s impending dismissal began to gain traction. Russia’s chief delegate to the military security and arms control talks in Vienna, Konstantin Gavrilov, had identified the Zaluzhny affair as the reason for Nuland’s visit long before the Times.

“Nuland flew there for a good reason, apparently to sort things out and clear up this conflict between Zelensky and Zaluzhny and to find out what is really happening and how it might all end,” Gavrilov told the Rossiya-24 TV channel on February 1. He also predicted that a reconciliation is “unlikely” because things between the two have “gone too far.”

Officially, the US has neither supported nor opposed Zaluzhny’s replacement. Within days of Nuland’s visit, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told American media that “we’re just not going to get embroiled in that particular decision.”

She was then taped discussing how to “midwife this thing” just days before the February 2014 coup that overthrew the elected Ukrainian government and triggered a conflict with Russia over Crimea and Donbass.

NATO Copies Russian Tactics in Wake of Ukraine's Disastrous Counteroffensive

The US and its allies sent tens of billions worth of advanced military hardware to Kiev in preparation for a massive counteroffensive that was supposed to break Russia’s will to fight. Five months later, the now ex-commander of Ukraine’s military admitted that the operation had failed and that there would be no “deep and beautiful breakthrough.”

Countries in NATO’s Eastern European flank have apparently been “taking notes” on Russia’s defensive strategy in the military operation zone after the blunting of Ukraine’s blood-soaked counteroffensive, showing interest in how the Russian military has revived the strategy of static defense into a key tool in modern warfare.

“Fortification measures have played a significant role in wars in our region in history,” Estonian defense official Susan Lillevali told The Economist amid efforts by the Baltic States and Poland to build “anti-mobility defensive installations” near their frontiers with Russia and Belarus. Tallinn has been ‘studying’ the NATO-Russia proxy war in Ukraine for tips, Estonian Defense League Lieutenant-Colonel Kaido Tiitus confirmed.


“Our main lesson is that we need to find a way to stop the advance of Russian armored units,” Tiitus said, without elaborating on why Russia would bother placing “armored units” into a NATO country and potentially triggering World War III, something President Putin said recently he has absolutely no interest in doing.

Valery Zaluzhny’s political ambitions are boosted by Ukraine’s president, who just removed the commander from leading a doomed war

In his masterpiece, the pre-World War II ‘Le fil de l’épée,’ a young Charles de Gaulle observes that soldiers and politicians usually can’t get along well: They’re too different by temperament, socialization, and purpose. And yet the man who would brilliantly succeed at being both a military and a political leader also insisted that, ultimately, they must cooperate to serve their country. That cooperation is precisely what has just broken down in Ukraine, in the middle of a large war that is going very badly for Kiev.

For, make no mistake, while there are several important aspects (discussed below) to the drawn-out dismissal of Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, Valery Zaluzhny, the fundamental fact remains that it is a story of failure, the failure of a key relationship in any state, but especially one fighting a war it is losing.

Zaluzhny, it is important to note, was not a particularly bad commander-in-chief. It is true that Kiev’s war effort is failing but there is no good reason to blame him or, at least, him most of all. He is a mediocre strategist instead of the quiet genius that some silly Western hype used to depict. Yet, the causes of Ukraine’s current, quite-possibly fatal difficulties on the battlefield in logistics and manpower are fundamental, not a matter of one less-than-brilliant general. Remember: Once short on clients, soldiers, and supplies, even Napoleon (and Zaluzhny definitely is no Napoleon) was defeated: There are things in war, especially in a war of attrition, that crushingly outweigh individual talent.

Hence, the ouster of his commander-in-chief is precisely what President Vladimir Zelensky is trying to pretend it is not: a political operation, not a result of level-headed analysis of strategic necessity and a systematic reboot.
