host of crimes, according to documents circulated by the militant group.

IS published a list of crimes and their punishments on 16 December 2014 to


serve “as an explanation and as a warning” to those living in territory under their
control in large parts of Iraq and Syria.

The document lists hadd crimes, which are considered to be “against the rights of
God,” and includes fixed punishments for theft, adultery, slander and banditry.

Crimes deemed hadd and their punishments are derived from the Quran and the
hadith, the collected teachings and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. However,
with the exception of Saudi Arabia, and IS-controlled areas, they are rarely applied.

sentenced to 1,000 lashes for blogging about free speech – labelled the
appointment “scandalous”, saying it meant “oil trumps human rights”.

Mr Badawi’s wife, Ensaf Haidar, who is leading an international campaign to
free her husband, said on Facebook that handing the role to Faisal bin Hassan
Trad, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador at the UN in Geneva, was effectively “a green

for its repression of pro-reform activists and dissidents, violation of foreign
workers’ rights, and systematic discrimination against women and religious

“The government severely restricted freedoms of expression, association and

including human rights defenders. Many received unfair trials before courts
that failed to respect due process, including a special anti-terrorism court that

report on the state of human rights in Saudi Arabia in 2014/15.

Saudi Arabia, according to the rights group, remains one of the most prolific

Yemenis rally against Saudi aggression

On Monday, thousands of people staged a demonstration in Sana’a
at the invitation of the leader of Yemen’s Ansarullah movement,
Abdel Malek al-Houthi.

The massive rally was held to mark the first anniversary of the Yemenis’
revolution against the corrupt administration of the country’s fugitive
former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi.

The rally came a day after the Houthi leader urged Yemenis to attend the
demonstration to “prove to the world that the people stand by the leadership

I have spent a fair amount of time in Saudi, in particular, Al Khobar, Riyadh and Jeddah. In Riyadh we were invited to go to Deera Square which the expatriates call Chop Chop Square. This obviously is the public square where they carry out beheadings and forced amputations. At the time they would behead these poor souls and hang their bodies in the public square for all to see. In a bizarre show of humor (if you can call it that) foreigners were pushed to the front of the group and passively forced to watch from the closest possible vantage point. It is my understanding that the public executions are only the tip of the iceberg, most of these capital punishments are carried privately in the prisons.

After leaving Saudi (many times) we would go to Bahrain, where there was a much more liberal attitude. We would stay in the intercontinental hotel which was full of prostitutes and Saudi men. These prostitutes were from all over Europe, Canada and the United States. The alcohol freely flowed in the restaurants and bars and the prosititutes openly plied their trade. The hypocrisy of the Saudi men was shameful and stunning. This is not to say that all Saudi men are like this but enough are that it is alarming.

When I see the UN positioning Saudi Arabia as a leader in human rights it literally turns my stomach. When I see Saudi leadership being treated respectfully and with dignity in Europe and the USA I find it hypocritical and appalling. When I see the Syrian refugee situation and leaders of "most" middle east countries turning a blind eye I want to scream. When I read about the Iranian (who are equally bad if not worse on human rights) nuclear deal being cut I find it scary and incomprehensible.

In my view, very few people in American/Eurpopean governments truly understand the culture and the way of life in the middle east. You can read about this culture and watch youtube videos all day long but spending time in this country dealing with business and government leaders is the only way to truly get a sense of what is happening. That said, it is not as complicated as many want you to believe. The world sticks their head in the sand to this gut wrenching behavior for one reason...................oil.

UN rights experts urge Riyadh to stop child executions

called on the Saudi regime to stop executing children, saying Riyadh
must abide by the terms of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“Any judgment imposing the death penalty upon persons who were children
at the time of the offense, and their execution, are incompatible with Saudi
Arabia’s international obligations,” the group said on Tuesday.

The experts also voiced concern over the fate of Ali Mohammed al-Nimr
(shown below), who was arrested during an anti-government protest in
Qatif, Eastern Province, back in 2012 when he was only 17 years old.
Nimr was later convicted of alleged criminal activities and handed down
a death penalty by Saudi Arabia’s Specialized Criminal Court in May 2015.’

At least 453 people taking part in the Hajj pilgrimage have been killed in a
stampede near the Islamic holy city of Mecca, officials in Saudi Arabia say.
Another 719 people were injured in the incident at Mina, which occurred as two
million pilgrims were taking part in the Hajj's last major rite.They converge on Mina
to throw stones at pillars representing the devil.Preparations for the Hajj were
marred when a crane collapsed at Mecca's Grand Mosque this month, killing 109
people.The Saudi civil defence directorate said on Twitter that 4,000 personnel had
been sent to the scene of Thursday's stampede, along with more than 220
emergency and rescue units. The injured are being taken to four hospitals in the area.

of "different nationalities", without providing details.

BBC Hausa Service correspondent Tchima Illa Issoufou, who was with some of
those affected in Mina, said there were many pilgrims from Niger among the dead.
The UK Foreign Office said it was in contact with the local authorities and was
urgently seeking more information about whether British nationals were involved.
The civil defence directorate did not say what caused the stampede. However, Al
Jazeera English's Basma Atassi in Mina reported that it took place among tents
erected on Street 204, and not where people were throwing stones at the Jamarat
pillars - which are surrounded by a five-storey bridge-like structure.

"There were a group of pilgrims sitting on the floor. Another group walked over to

night during the pilgrimage.The stampede was the deadliest at the Hajj since 2006,
when more than 360 pilgrims were killed in the same area.The Saudi authorities
have been working on improving transport and other infrastructure in the area in
an attempt to try to prevent such incidents.The Hajj is the fifth and final pillar of
Islam. It is the journey that every able-bodied adult Muslim must undertake at
least once in their lives if they can afford it.
