This interesting idea predates UFO conferences: a century ago, William James put it this way in Pragmatism:

We may be in the Universe as dogs and cats are in our libraries, seeing the books and hearing the conversation, but having no inkling of the meaning of it all.

Or maybe, as post #16 suggests, we do have some inkling: like children listening in on the grownups, which is how Jordan Maxwell misspent his childhood.

The next thought being: perhaps we should be out in the sun kicking a football or whatever?

Sorry Selkie, i thought you didn´t had a too good day. I should have figure it out you were been sarcastic. I always love your post and this one didn´t fit you, sorry once again.
Hey Bill, don´t you think that if you explained in a lovely manner to the animals they would have helped a little?
I think we all should try to comunicate with them from an equal perspective, give it a try and you´ll be impressed with the results.
