Default Victory for Digital Privacy in California?

This just arrived in my email from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).

Interesting to see how this would work with all of the Federal and Corporate programs already in place capturing everything - data, internet, email, etc. Were privacy advocates just tossed a bone or could this actually be meaningful?

Quote Breaking news! After months of intense pressure from EFF, fellow public interest groups, media organizations, privacy advocates, tech companies, and thousands of members of the public, Gov. Jerry Brown has signed the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act! The new law protects Californians by requiring a warrant for digital records, including emails and texts, as well as a user's geographical location. These essential protections apply to your devices and also to the online services that store your data.

Celebrate this win and support the fight for digital privacy with a donation to EFF!

EFF, working with the ACLU and the California Newspaper Publishers Association, sponsored the bill from the very beginning, recognizing that the right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure is inherently tied to freedom of speech.

We played a special role in convincing the San Diego Police Officers Association to endorse the bill, advancing the diversity of support necessary for it to pass muster. A reporter from the Voice of San Diego wrote:

Jeff Jordon, vice president of the San Diego Police Officers Association, told me in an email that the group got the hard sell from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit that focuses on civil liberties in the digital world.
Our commitment to protecting your rights in the digital world is strengthened by the passion and dedication of our supporters, many of whom share California as our home. Donate to EFF today and support a future with robust privacy rights!

    For our rights and freedoms,

Need stingray surveillance? Get a warrant! California gov signs landmark privacy law

    Published time: 9 Oct, 2015 05:03

‘A new law signed by California Governor Jerry Brown enacts sweeping digital privacy
protections, such as imposing a warrant requirement for police to access nearly any
type of digital data produced by or contained within a device or service.

Governor Brown had rejected several similar proposals in past years, but on Thursday
he signed the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act. Under the law, the
government is forbidden from “accessing electronic device information by means of
physical interaction or electronic communication with the device.”

The American Civil Liberties Union described the passage of the law as a landmark win.’

“Governor Brown just signed a law that says ‘no’ to warrantless government snooping
in our digital information. This is a landmark win for digital privacy and all Californians,”
said Nicole Ozer, Technology & Civil Liberties Policy Director at the ACLU of California,
in a statement. “We hope this is a model for the rest of the nation in protecting our
    digital privacy rights.”

NSA Whistleblower William Binney: The Future of FREEDOM

    Published on 28 Jan 2015

A 36-year veteran of America’s Intelligence Community, William Binney resigned
from his position as Director for Global Communications Intelligence (COMINT)
at the National Security Agency (NSA) and blew the whistle, after discovering that
his efforts to protect the privacy and security of Americans were being undermined
by those above him in the chain of command.

The NSA data-monitoring program which Binney and his team had developed --
codenamed ThinThread -- was being aimed not at foreign targets as intended,
but at Americans (codenamed as Stellar Wind); destroying privacy here and
around the world. Binney voices his call to action for the billions of individuals
whose rights are currently being violated.

William Binney speaks out in this feature-length interview with Tragedy and
Hope's Richard Grove, focused on the topic of the ever-growing Surveillance
    State in America.

On January 22, 2015: (Berlin, Germany) – The Government Accountability Project
(GAP) is proud to announce that retired NSA Technical Director and GAP client,
William "Bill" Binney, will accept the Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in
Intelligence Award today in Berlin, Germany. The award is presented annually

The U.S. media reporting on this is practically nil. Most are headlining on new limits on papparazzi use of drones!

There's also this on Smart TV's:

Quote SACRAMENTO (KRON) — Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a first-in-the-nation bill addressing privacy concerns as new smart TVs get equipped with voice recognition features.

Brown announced Tuesday that he has signed AB1116. The bill blocks a television’s recording device unless consumers are prominently informed during initial setup that the feature could record conversations.

It also forbids TV manufacturers and related third parties from using or selling stored conversations for advertising purposes.

The bill was spearheaded by state Assemblyman Mike Gatto, a Democrat from Glendale. He worried that conversations could be captured and transmitted.

Privacy experts say the changes, while important, may not go far enough to protect consumers.

They say the information collected could still be used to make psychological or cultural assessments of people for insurance or customer relations companies.

I still have a dumb flip phone. It doesn't need much charging. You can get a hold of me mostly anytime because it doesn't die like many smart phones do these days.. I use it for what a phone is needed for emergencys etc. Nothing else. And I don't walk around like a zombie looking at this idiot box all day. I look at the world instead of my phone. This includes people, trees, clouds, birds, children laughing, people smiling, etc. This is the smart phone I like, my idiot phone.

‘Just because you don’t use Facebook doesn’t mean the social
media giant isn’t secretly tracking your every move online. A
shocking new investigative report out of Europe has revealed
that even non-users of the mostly Waste-of-Time-Book are
having tracking cookies quietly placed on their computers and
devices without consent, allowing Mark Zuckerberg et al. to
    monitor their behavior and location.

Entitled From social media service to advertising network: A critical
analysis of Facebook’s Revised Policies and Terms, the paper explains
how Facebook’s data collection and tracking protocols are ethically
and morally questionable, at best. Facebook’s contract terms, in fact,
are so unfair and stacked against users that they blatantly violate
European consumer protection law, according to experts.’
