Divers come face-to-face with gigantic sunfish making a rare appearance in Portugal
A rare footage by divers off Portugal recently captured a gigantic sunfish that dwarfed its human admirers, as they came face-to-face with this docile behemoth ...
“The slow-moving fish and clear water allow for some spectacular close-ups of this amazing animal,” states the video description. The bizzare-looking fish, also referred to as Mola molas, are the world’s largest bony fishes, which can weigh as much as 5,000 pounds. Its flat body features a back fin that folds into itself as it grows, and serves as a rudder called a clavus, and its mouth never fully closes, contributing to its weird but cute appearance. The gentle sunfish typically roam pelagic zones far from established dive sites, but can sometimes be seen basking at the ocean's surface on their side.
