I had horses, Araucaria, and scouted around for days and weeks and months to find the most inexpensive land I could find, on inhospitable land that I thought no one would be able to farm. We built a horse barn there and I commuted there and back twice a day, getting up before dark, getting home after dark, working in my office during the day. Then it turned out that corporate farming came in and leased the land all around me, and they work 24-hour days and sprayed "stuff" on the land to grow corn crops. All I can offer you and your daughter is "good luck" and hopes that you find suitable lodging for the horse(s).

Apparently this is COMMON CORE MATH. The mother posted this on facebook, upset because her daughter was given a "minus one" mark for giving the correct answer.

A while back, I reported on our holiday that took us to St-Emilion and the next village, Montagne. Today, near Puisseguin, the next village after that, on a narrow country lane a truck hit a coach of pensioners on an outing, which burst into flames, killing 43 people. The coach driver just had time to open the doors, saving 8 passengers. Nearly all the victims will be from the same small neighbouring village, so it’s like one community losing almost a whole generation of old folks, a huge tragedy for those concerned and many more besides.

"Carole" is obviously reading way too much for her own good, and this pupil is also too clever by half. She probably did an addition instead of a substraction as well.

I remember lessons like this. I don't think this has anything to do with common core math. There are exact answers, and there are reasonable answers, in which one does a quick general calculation. My guess is that this class was learning about rounding things up to the nearest zero or five.
I use this technique to this day, when trying to add up items I'm shopping, and don't want to get out a calculator. My husband who was raised in Costa Rica never learnt this, and still thinks he must include every penny when doing his additions, and places enormous importance on an exact answer.
Of course, both kinds of additions/subtractions are needed, but it depends on the larger context.
One is an estimate, the other aims for accuracy.

Yes Ulli, but the question was badly set. 75 was both a reasonable roundish figure and the exact answer. If a reasonable rough estimate was wanted, why not just let the child get on with working it out?

I came up with 70 as the answer before I saw the teacher's comment at the bottom.
Because of how my mind works now, and this in turn because most of my life I have had to work with numbers.

Ulli, When I see the pictures of your gardens, the beauty of your river, trees, flowers, with the mountains around you, I am filled with love, joy and hope! I have much appreciation for what you are creating in your own backyard. It is a sanctuary and what you share with us is so inspiring! You are leading by example and making a difference in your own community! Not too many on Avalon have taken up that challenge in real life. You are a wonderful example of how we all should be.
