‘Four former drone operators who are speaking out against the U.S. military’s ongoing
targeted killing program—and risking federal prosecution for doing so—appeared on
Democracy Now! Friday morning, alongside renowned human rights attorney Jesselyn
Radack, for their first extended interview on air.

“We have seen the abuse firsthand, and we are horrified,” former Air Force Staff Sgt.
Brandon Bryant said at a press conference Thursday.

As Common Dreams reported earlier this week, the Air Force pilots-turned-whistleblowers
issued an open letter to President Barack Obama warning that the drone program “is one
of the most devastating driving forces for terrorism and destabilization around the world.”‘

Wikileaks has obtained and decrypted this previously unreleased video footage from
a US Apache helicopter in 2007. It shows Reuters journalist Namir Noor-Eldeen,
driver Saeed Chmagh, and several others as the Apache shoots and kills them in a
public square in Eastern Baghdad. They are apparently assumed to be insurgents.
After the initial shooting, an unarmed group of adults and children in a minivan
arrives on the scene and attempts to transport the wounded. They are fired upon
as well. The official statement on this incident initially listed all adults as insurgents
and claimed the US military did not know how the deaths ocurred. Wikileaks
released this video with transcripts and a package of supporting documents on April

David Cameron said a ''dangerous, insecure and difficult world'' meant an increase
in defence spending was essential

More money should be spent on the SAS and drones to combat the threat of
Islamic State extremists, David Cameron has told defence chiefs. The prime
minister has asked them to look at increasing funding for special forces and new
spy aircraft as part of a review of the nation's defences.Mr Cameron said it was
about ensuring Britain's safety in an unstable world.The priorities were set out after
a pledge in the Budget to spend 2% of national wealth on defence until 2020.

The prime minister wants the strategic defence and security review, due to
conclude by the end of the year, to prioritise resources that will help to protect the
UK from evolving threats - not only extremism but also a more aggressive Russia
and the risks posed by cyber attacks.The defence chiefs were briefed in a meeting
following the unexpected Budget commitment to meet Nato's target of spending
2% of national income on defence every year up to 2020.

The UK's fleet of 10 MQ-9 Reaper armed drones are to be operated from
within the UK at RAF Waddington. The drones were originally operated
from Creech Air Force Base in Nevada, USA.

The UK has a number of other drones in use, including Hermes 450 surveillance
drones which are gradually being replaced by Watchkeeper WK450 surveillance
drones (54 of which are on order). The UK also operates smaller drones, such as
the Black Hornet, Desert Hawk and T-Hawk. There are two drones in development;
Taranis, a UCAV technology demonstrator, and Telemos, a joint venture with France,
based on BAE Mantis.

The UK is the only country in Europe to operate armed UAVs.

The most technologically advanced combat stealth drone ever built by Britain
has successfully completed its first test flights at a secret location.

Taranis, named after the Celtic god of thunder, will be capable of launching
precision strikes in hostile territory without being detected.

The project, which has so far cost £185 million - funded jointly by the Ministry
of Defence and UK industry, will be able to launch precision strikes in hostile
territory while remaining undetected.

But bosses today said that although the aircraft could fly itself autonomously,
it would not be used in that way - and would not be able to set its own missions.

Taranis was first unveiled in July 2010, but has remained classified until now.

On Thursday David Cameron is expected to set out his case to for UK
bombing raids against so-called Islamic State targets in Syria and Iraq.


The government has identified IS as one of the main threats facing the
country, and the Prime Minister is seeking the backing of Parliament
before a possible vote on the issue.

From an airbase in Lincolnshire, RAF crews are already flying unmanned
drones over the skies of Iraq and Syria.

Our Defence Correspondent Jonathan Beale has been given rare access to the base where crews are currently flying combat missions against IS.

‘The U.S. Government failed to deter them through threats of criminal prosecution, and
clumsy attempts to intimidate their families. Now four former Air Force drone operators-
turned-whistleblowers have had their credit cards and bank accounts frozen, according
to human rights attorney Jesselyn Radack.

“My drone operators went public this week and now their credit cards and bank accounts
are frozen,” Radack lamented on her Twitter feed (the spelling of her post has been
conventionalized). This was done despite the fact that none of them has been charged
with a criminal offense – but this is a trivial formality in the increasingly Sovietesque
American National Security State.’
