The placebo effect is golden proof of our body's power to heal itself. Placebo effect, if administered properly is at least 40% effective - this is more effective than some drugs. The only main difference between placebo effect and drug effect is that placebo effect depends on the level of belief or conviction the "patient" has at their disposal, and how well their body responds to that belief; all variables that vary results from patient to patient.

This variability is the only thing preventing us from saying "The placebo effects work as well as most drugs". Interestingly, the big drug companies only see the placebo effect as a) a potential threat to their industry, and b) a pain in the ass result variance that complicates the way they must do testing (double blind tests are more complex and difficult to control than standard testing).

Someone really needs to look into ways to stabilize the variability of the placebo effect. Of course it won't be our greedy capitalist medical entities that do it, and the socialist medical entities don't have the time or money ... a catch 22 I suppose.

Here's an extreme example of the placebo effect in action (paraphrased):
There was a study done to try to measure how far the placebo effect could actually go. A group of several people that had long term knee problems / injuries and who received years and years of physical therapy with no improvements were used. I believe they also selected people that didn't seem to have a major physical problem with their knees - by all accounts, the physical therapy should have been working but for some reason wasn't producing results.

The patients were then brought together and were told that revolutionary new surgery had been crafted, that would 100% guarantee that they would walk again! They would be able to walk within two weeks of the surgery, and that was a promise! The idea was to raise excitement about just how effective this brand new surgery was, to quell negative thoughts or doubts -- this is an important step in administering placebo - the patient has to believe it - that belief has to make it into the subconscious to do its work.

A week or so later, all the patients were put under completely, and the surgeon made a few large incisions around the knee, and then sewed them back up on every patient. He didn't actually do anything, just cut them open, then sewed them back up. No surgery actually happened.

After re-awakening, each patient was told that the operation had been completely successful, and with two weeks of additional physio, they would be able to walk again.

The result was something like 70% success. The majority of the people were up and walking and on their way to a proper recovery after two weeks.
This was after all drugs, even some real surgeries, physio therapy, etc. had completely failed these people. Before this study, it was medically deemed that these people would never walk again; the power of their own mind and own belief healed most of them, they just needed that prodding to bring out their own beliefs strong enough, to have the desired effect.

It should also be noted, that it was likely their own belief that they would never walk again (perhaps told to them by a past doctor), that rendered traditional treatments for their knee problems useless.

Now, think the application if we could tap this. Guess what, our controllers already have -- the "info wars" are winding down, while the "belief wars" are just starting to gain strength. Be careful what you believe and be extra careful when you hold any belief strong enough and/or long enough that it becomes a part of your own subconscious. Powerful stuff happens there ...

When you are one step ahead of the crowd, you are a genius.
Two steps ahead, and you are deemed a crackpot.

A highlight on the last part. Thank you, Mike.

So true, powerful stuff happens in the subconscious. The secret to undo and mend. It’s worth the time and effort to tease out the gunk that one still labels as theirs.

Piggybacking on your excellent thread now Runningdeer...

Norman Doidge has written an extraordinary book called The Brain's way of Healing.

It is so much more than what I ever imagined it to be.

It offers remarkable insights into the lives of people who have retrained and healed their brains.

I can't give you a full synopsis because I have cut my finger very deeply on a very sharp chisel and it has turned me into a two-finger typist as a result but here is a video talk he gave back in July 2014.

A quick zap sent and visual for your finger and brain.

Thanks, Constance. I wasn't familiar with Dr. Norman Doidge. The video is chock full of stories and information.

Below are two reviews for Dr. Norman Doidge’s book, "The Brain's Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity, 2015”.
“…compelling stories about the power of ingenious technologies and disciplined awareness methods generated by innovators who transcended their own brain challenges, and who now use them to help others make radical improvements in conditions often deemed hopeless. It points to a future of remarkable and unprecedented brain healing.”
—Martha Herbert, MD, PhD, Neurologist, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts General Hospital, author of The Autism Revolution

“Brilliant and highly original. Neurology used to be considered a depressing discipline with patients often displaying fascinating but essentially untreatable symptoms and disabilities. Drawing on the last three decades of research, Doidge challenges this view, using vivid portraits of patients and their physicians. The book is a treasure trove of the author’s own deep insights and a clear bright light of optimism shines through every page.”
—V. S. Ramachandran, MD, PhD, neurologist, neuroscientist, and author of The Tell-Tale Brain (W. W. Norton, 2011), Director, UCSD Center for Brain and Cognition

Norman Doidge - Brain's Healing Energies:

There are revolutionary techniques that can alleviate anything from chronic pain to Parkinson's disease or Down syndrome.

For a very long time scientists thought the brain was an organ beyond treatment. If something went wrong or if one was born with a deficit, the conclusion was "tough luck." Not so anymore. There are revolutionary techniques that can alleviate anything from chronic pain to Parkinson's disease or Down syndrome. Dr. Norman Doidge lays it out in his book "The Brain's Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity." He'll discuss this, and more, with Steve Paikin.

Thanks so much for the zap, the visuals for the brain (great work on those graphics Paula, you just seem to have mastered the art so well), for writing that synopsis and for the video

I was only thinking after I finished posting that I now needed to take the advice of Norm Doidge and start strengthening pathways to the brain that will help me to two-finger type faster!!!
