München Shooting: Terror Embedded Journalism?

There’s a certain “yawn…” moment looming about “daily shooter” phenomena provided, of course,
that you are not getting shot yourself. It stems from predictability. What independent media dub
“anomalies” does not seem so anomalous anymore, because anomalies themselves are apparently
inevitable, and therefore: predictable, even more so then the main line of events mediated by mass media.

We are talking, of course, about frequent unreliability of media images, ties of perpetrators to some
form of security and/or intelligence services, unbelievable nature of not so minute details of the story, etc.

München shoot out of July, 22 (dubbed in German München Amoklauf – “running amok” ) displays one such
possible “un-anomalous anomaly”, we’ll name, for the sake of the argument, “terror-embedded journalism”.

‘The bodies of the victims of Munich’s recent mass shooting barely cold, German “authorities”
and politicians have wasted no time in calling for more police state measures and the further
clamp down on access to gun ownership in Germany.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Hermann is now pushing for going so far as to revise the
German Constitution so that limits placed on using the military domestically can be removed,
allowing the German military to be used inside Germany for “large-scale terrorist situations.”

The limits on Germany’s military were put in place after World War II and in response to
Germany’s experience with the Nazi regime with all its excesses, totalitarianism, violence,
and genocide.’

media have cast him as just another shooter.

Last Friday, all of Germany stood still as news arrived of another terrible
shooting. After news outlets reported that a young man shot several people
outside a shopping center in the city of Munich, many believed that the first
“Islamist” terrorist attack had taken place in the country. After it became
clear that the gunman, Ali David Sonboly, had Iranian roots, media outlets
from Berlin to New York City did not hesitate to link him with Islam. Man
news channels preferred to call Sonboly—who was born and raised in Germany
—a “German-Iranian,” instead of just “German.” Furthermore, many reports,
mostly based on rumors which circulated during the first hours after the
massacre, claimed that Sonboly shouted the supposedly characteristic
“Allahu Akbar” before he murdered his innocent victims.

While the Bavarian police tried to tamp down on the uncorroborated chatter
and baseless reports, right-wing politicians did their best to exploit the scenario,
inciting hatred and fear against Muslims, migrants and refugees.
