Alien Signal Traced To Sunlike Star Sparks SETI Interest

SETI researchers are buzzing about a strong spike in radio signals that seemed to come from the direction of a sunlike star in the constellation Hercules, known as HD 164595.

The signal conceivably fits the profile for an intentional transmission from an extraterrestrial source – but it could also be a case of earthly radio interference, or a microlensing event in which the star’s gravitational field focused stray signals coming from much farther away.

In any case, the blip is interesting enough to merit discussion by those who specialize in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, or SETI – including Centauri Dreams’ Paul Gilster, who brought the case into the public eye this weekend.

At least two SETI research groups are aiming to track HD 164595 tonight. The SETI Institute is using the Allen Telescope Array in northern California, while METI International is looking to the Boquete Optical SETI Observatory in Panama.

Gilster reports that the signal spike was detected more than a year ago, on May 15, 2015, by the RATAN-600 radio telescope in Zelenchukskaya. That facility is in the Russian republic of Karachay-Cherkessia, not far from the Georgian border.

Dave Shock grew up in the Dayton Ohio area not far from Wright-Patterson AFB. Growing up near Wright-Patterson AFB spurred his interest in UFO’s. In 2008 he got more interested and as a amateur astronomer, asked this question. “Why don’t we use the technology of today and answer the age old question: ‘Are they real?'” Dave started a campaign to launch a satellite for UFO Research. Dave learned about what it takes to get a satellite up, however, satellites back then were too expensive and he never got off the ground, until today. Along came CubeSats that are cheap and easy to acquire. Dave heard about a group sending up a CubeSat in the name of UFO research, so he made contact and explained about his past Satellite project and his role in the UFO community. Before he knew it, he was on board with CubeSat For Disclosure. Dave Shock’s parents saw a UFO about 30 miles west of Wright-Patterson AFB back in the early 70’s, but never reported it. They were near the town of Eaton, Ohio. They pulled over and watched the bright red glowing light, they also had another sighting of a smaller craft come out, heading in the direction of Wright-Patterson AFB. Dave’s father is a Korean War vet and does not shake up easily, to this day, refuses to speak of it. His mother has had a long lived interest in Ufology, and told him of it, but not until he started his first satellite project in 2008. Dave saw a boomerang shaped UFO over Denver back in 2013, 4 times in one week.

Two unusually large earthquakes hit one of Iceland's biggest volcanoes early on Monday, raising concerns of a possible eruption, the Icelandic Met Office said.

The Katla volcano has not erupted properly since 1918 and scientists say it is overdue to do so, although an eruption could still be decades away.

"It is quite a dynamic situation now, in the next hours and days following this, but as we speak at the moment we do not see any signs that there is an imminent hazardous unrest about to happen," Matthew Roberts, a natural hazards scientist at the Icelandic Met Office, said.

Ash from an eruption of the nearby Eyjafjallajokull volcano in 2010 shut down much of Europe's airspace for six days.

Katla, in southern Iceland, was rocked by quakes of magnitude 4.5 and 4.6 overnight. The volcano sustained similar movements in 2011.

Archaeological findings may indicate human occupation in the region dating to at least somewhere around the 10th and 8th millennia BCE. By the 5th millennium BC these peoples had fashioned one of the world's earliest known archeoastronomical devices (roughly contemporary to the Goseck circle in Germany and the Mnajdra megalithic temple complex in Malta).

Astrophysicist Thomas G. Brophy suggests the hypothesis that the southerly line of three stones inside the calendar circle represented the three stars of Orion’s Belt and the other three stones inside the calendar circle represented the shoulders and head stars of Orion as they appeared in the sky. These correspondences were for two dates—circa 4,800 BC and at precessional opposition—representing how the sky "moves" long term. Brophy proposes that the circle was constructed and used circa the later date, and the dual date representation was a conceptual representation of the motion of the sky over a precession cycle.

Near the calendar circle, which is made of smaller stones, there are alignments of large megalithic stones. The southerly lines of these megaliths, Brophy shows, aligned to the same stars as represented in the calendar circle, all at the same epoch, circa 6270 BC. The calendar circle correlation with Orion's belt occurred between 6400 BC and 4900 BC, matching the radio-carbon dating of campfires around the circle.”
