Geese (and I guess swans as well - maybe ducks too?) are very social animals with great memories, and this allows them to become pretty good friends with humans! When I was very young, our neighbour had rescued a baby Canada goose -- mom died or coyotes got her or something, so he raised the goose for the whole season until it was large enough to join the flock and fly south for the winter. For about six or seven years straight, the goose (Hector was his name) always would show up on his patio waiting to see his friend (winter in Canada is long - geese spend about 4-6 months in the south to escape the ice). Hector would hang out with the neighbour most of the summer sometimes leaving the flock to sleep on his patio at night. Hector was assumed deceased when he stopped visiting.
