Good news everyone, there’s a magnetic force field surrounding the Earth and protecting it from harmful radiation from space. Deadly solar radiation streaming from the Sun and cosmic rays coming from other stars are stopped dead in their tracks by this protective magnetosphere.

But also bad news, this force field is a swirling donut-shaped field of deadly deadly radiation. Any astronauts wanting to go to deep space will need to pass through this region, and take an increased dose of radiation.

I’m talking, of course, about the Earth’s Van Allen Belts.

Western Europe Will Experience A Spectacular Partial Solar Eclipse on August 21st

The western portion of Europe will see a minor partial eclipse of the Sun on August 21st at, or near, sunset. Some cities will see the beginning of a partial eclipse, but the Sun will set before reaching maximum phase. Lisbon, Madrid, Oslo, Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris will see only 2.3% of the Sun obscured at sunset.

Some other cities will see maximum phase before sunset. London, for example, will see the Moon obscure the Sun by four percent at sunset. Maximum eclipse will occur at 7:05 pm with the Sun setting at 7:07 pm. Four percent is small but still observable with proper filtered glasses.

Dublin, Aberdeen, and Reykjavik will all see a complete partial eclipse of the Sun from beginning to end. Aberdeen will only see 1.6% obscuration, while Reykjavik will see only 2.2%, and Dublin viewing 3.8%.

Radio Relic Discovered In A Low-Mass Merging Galaxy Cluster

Astronomers have detected a new single radio relic in a low-mass merging galaxy cluster known as PLCK G200.9−28.2. The finding, presented Aug. 5 in a paper published on the arXiv pre-print server, could offer some hints about merging processes in galaxy clusters.

Cosmic Magnifying Lens Reveals Inner Jets Of Black Holes

Astronomers using Caltech's Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) have found evidence for a bizarre lensing system in space, in which a large assemblage of stars is magnifying a much more distant galaxy containing a jet-spewing supermassive black hole. The discovery provides the best view yet of blobs of hot gas that shoot out from supermassive black holes.

ESOcast 122 Light: Supermassive Black Holes Feed On Cosmic Jellyfish

Observations of “Jellyfish galaxies” with ESO’s Very Large Telescope have revealed a previously unknown way to fuel supermassive black holes. It seems the mechanism that produces the tentacles of gas and newborn stars that give these galaxies their nickname also makes it possible for the gas to reach the central regions of the galaxies, feeding the black hole that lurks in each of them and causing it to shine brilliantly.
