Zooming In On The Cosmic Eyelash

This zoom sequence starts from a broad view of the sky and takes the viewer deep into the constellation of Aquarius (The Water Bearer). We pass the globular star cluster Messier 2 and go far beyond the galaxy into a distant cluster of galaxies. There we see a curious arc, a gravitationally lensed version of an even more distant galaxy, nicknamed the Cosmic Eyelash, seen using ALMA.

Globular clusters are a spherical collection of stars very tightly bound by gravity, which gives them relatively high stellar densities toward their centers. In 2016 Dr. Rosanne Di Stefano co-authored a research paper titled “Globular Clusters as Cradles of Life and Advanced Civilizations”, outlining that if advanced civilizations can develop in globular clusters, then the distances between these civilizations and other stars would be far smaller than typical distances between stars in the Galactic disk. Also, this relative proximity of stars would facilitate interstellar communication and travel. After locating and presenting this VHS video, Ben and Tony were mutually introduced to the Socorro original NICAP investigator, Ray Stanford, through Jan Harzan. Ben and Tony have spent 100’s of hours discussing this case in person with Ray, a friend of the late Dr. J Allen Hynek, Project Blue Books UFO expert. Ray revealed new and revolutionary evidence regarding this case to us and still possesses material gathered form the site, including the rock broken under one of the crafts landing struts, which is still under study. Our presentation is a fascinating look from the inside out of the Air Forces investigation of this case, which today is still classified as an “Unknown”. Scientists detect strange repeating radio burst on the other side of the cosmos Fast radio bursts, or FRBs, have baffled scientists for the past decade. Until recently, we've only seen a FRB repeat once, and now we've observed another. But what does this latest discovery mean? It seems like every time we attempt to take a step toward better understanding our cosmos we are left with more questions than answers — a regular Bonini’s Paradox. Just a few years ago we didn’t even know that the cosmic phenomena known as fast radio bursts (FRB) — rare, bright, and inexplicable signals from beyond our galaxy — existed. And until recently, only one of these FRBs had been recorded on more than one occasion. However, last week, a team has recorded yet another repeating FRB.

Tracking Stellar Motions

The video shows the motions of two million stars about 1.1–1.5 million years in the future. It displays a map of the full sky as seen from the Sun.

The star initially circled is Gliese 710; its trajectory is then indicated with the extending line. Gliese 710 will have a close encounter with our Sun in about 1.3 million years, coming within the Oort Cloud reservoir of comets that resides in the outskirts of our Solar System. The star is predicted to pass within about 2.3 trillion kilometres, the equivalent of about 16 000 Earth–Sun distances.
The stars are plotted in galactic coordinates and the plane of the Milky Way stands out as the horizontal band with greater density of stars.

Waiting For A Stellar Encounter

A view of a small part of the sky as if you were staring at a star (centre) approaching nearly head on, and then as it passes by and away again.

The motion can be likened to what an observer standing beside a road would see looking at an approaching car, and then swinging around to continue to follow it as it moves away. As a result, the objects in the background – in this case distant stars – become blurred as you move quickly to maintain a visual on the passing object.

The focus of this animation is the star known as Gliese 710. It will have a close encounter with our Sun in 1.3 million years, passing within the Oort Cloud reservoir of comets in the outskirts of our Solar System. The star is predicted to pass within about 2.3 trillion kilometres, the equivalent of about 16 000 Earth–Sun distances. The star’s motion is set against a background of other moving stars and the visualisation covers, very quickly, the timeframe from about 1.1–1.5 million years in the future.

The size of the field of view is 10 x 5º (for comparison: the Moon spans 0.5º on the sky) and the colours represent the astronomical colours of the stars as derived from the Gaia data. Gliese 710 is an orange K-type dwarf star, an ordinary star similar to the Sun but less hot and less massive.
