Sun Unleashes Its First X-Class Monster Flare of 2017.

Region 2673 just produced a major X2.2 solar flare at approximately 09:10 UTC (Sept 6). This is the first X-Class event to be detected since May 2015. The active region is still in a decent position for Earth directed eruptions. More updates will be provided should a coronal mass ejection (CME) be associated.

As astronomers discover more planets outside the Solar System, they are examining what conditions can foster or stifle the habitability of planets. A new study suggests that X-rays emitted by a planet's host star may provide critical clues to just how hospitable a star system could be.

A team of researchers used data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton to look at the X-ray brightness of 24 stars with masses similar to the Sun that were at least a billion years old.

Since stellar X-rays mirror magnetic activity, X-ray observations can tell astronomers about the high-energy environment around the star. In the new study the X-ray data from Chandra and XMM-Newton revealed that stars like the Sun and their less massive cousins calm down surprisingly quickly after a turbulent youth.

This is good news for the future habitability of planets orbiting Sun-like stars, because the amount of harmful X-rays and ultraviolet radiation from stellar flares striking planets in orbit around them would be less than scientists used to think.

Astronomers will continue to look at many factors that they think play into the habitability of planets around the thousands of exoplanets that have been discovered. Studies like these show that X-rays can play a critical role in the ultimate question of where life might exist elsewhere in the Universe.

Chris Impey is a University Distinguished Professor and deputy head of the astronomy department at the University of Arizona, in charge of academic programs. His research is on observational cosmology, gravitational lensing and the evolution and structure of galaxies. He has more than 170 refereed publications and 60 conference proceedings, and his work has been supported by $20 million in grants from NASA and the National Science Foundation. As a professor, he has won 11 teaching awards and has been heavily involved in the curriculum and instructional technology development. Impey is a past vice president of the American Astronomical Society. He has also been an NSF Distinguished Teaching Scholar, a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar and the Carnegie Council on Teaching's Arizona Professor of the Year. Impey has written more than 30 popular articles on cosmology and astrobiology and authored two introductory textbooks. He has published three popular science books: "The Living Cosmos," "How It Ends" and "How It Began," and has three more in preparation, including one on his work in India with Buddhist monks from Tibet. He was co-chair of the Education and Public Outreach Study Group for the Astronomy Decadal Survey of the National Academy of Sciences. In 2009 he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

CME On Its Way Toward Earth - G3, S1 Storm Alert / Radio Blackout Impacts Expected

A CME struck Earth's magnetic field during the late hours of Sept. 6th. So far the impact has done little to stoke strong geomagnetic activity. Another CME is on the way, however, and it is more potent, having been accelerated in our direction by yesterday's powerful X9-class solar flare. NOAA forecasters say strong G3-class geomagnetic storms are possible on Sept. 8th when the inbound CME arrives

On Sept. 6th at 1202 UT, sunspot AR2673 unleashed a major X9.3-class solar flare--the strongest solar flare in more than a decade. X-rays and UV radiation from the blast ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a strong shortwave radio blackout over Europe, Africa and the Atlantic Ocean.

Coronagraph images from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory confirm that the explosion also produced a coronal mass ejection (CME) with an Earth-directed component. The CME will probably reach our planet on Sept. 8th, bringing with it a chance of G2- or G3-class geomagnetic storms.
