Sentinel-5P will soon join the other Copernicus Sentinel satellites in orbit. Copernicus is the world’s largest environmental monitoring programme, and is operated by ESA and the European Commission. With Sentinel-5P, Copernicus will have its first satellite dedicated to the monitoring of atmospheric chemistry. These measurements are important to observe air pollution and climate change.

100ft Wide Asteroid Set To Pass Extremely Close To Earth Next Week

Asteroid 2012 TC4 is expected to fly past Earth on October 12, and while NASA and ESA said it is "absolutely certain" the rock will miss the planet, they are unsure how close it will pass. Early observations indicated that it could come as close as 4,200 miles from the Earth's surface - well within the ring of geostationary satellites - on October 12. However, new observations by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile reveal that it will miss our planet by 27,000 miles - roughly one-eighth of the distance to the Moon - which is still very close in astronomical terms. These are the first observations of the asteroid since shortly after its discovery in 2012. Discovery Date: 2012-10-04 Observatory: Pan-STARRS 1, Haleakala

Astronomers have found five new supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies. When galaxies collide and merge with each other, it can force their supermassive black holes close together. While models predict this would happen, it has been very difficult to find these giant black hole pairs until now. The combination of data from Chandra, WISE, and the Large Binocular Telescope led to this bumper crop of black holes. This discovery could lead to a better understanding of how giant black holes grow.
