A New York Times best-selling author, a Harvard alum, and a UFO enthusiast all walk into a restaurant and the hostess asks “table for one?” Besides being a very poor attempt at a very bad joke, this week’s guest on The Malliard Report is in fact all three. Residing currently in Boston, and having grown up in Princeton, Ben graduated from Harvard in 1991 where he watched a lot of friends obtain almost instant success from careers in the financial industry. Ben’s latest work focuses on the peculiarity of the 37th parallel and the fervent research compiled by Chuck Zukowski. Following up on reports of “shallow-focus” earthquakes in Virginia and Colorado and a theory that a potential underground tunnel system runs from at least Dulce, New Mexico all the way to Area 51 in Nevada, Chuck began to notice a pattern developing. These events and locations were all located on approximately the 37th parallel. Not one to chalk things up to coincidence, Chuck began to check to see what all sits on the 37th parallel, and an interesting list quickly came together that includes: San Jose California, Mono Lake California (home of numerous UFO sightings), Area 51 Nevada, US Naval Undersea Warfare Base – Hawthorne Nevada, Taos New Mexico (home of the Taos hum), Dulce New Mexico (rumored massive Deep Underground Base) Aztec New Mexico (UFO crash and recovery – 1948), Blanca Peak Colorado (UFO hotspot), Coffey County Kansas (cattle mutilations reported in 1897), Howell County Missouri (cattle mutilations reported – 1896), Piedmont Missouri (over 500 witnesses report UFO sightings), Cape Girardeau Missouri (UFO crash and recovery), Wytheville Virginia (mass UFO sighting reports) and the Greenbrier Virginia underground bunker (designed to house congress in times of war). Ben’s book follows Chuck in his relentless quest to find out the truth about this anomaly, and is currently in the works to be a full length film as well. (In which Ben admits that he would like to see Robert Downey Jr. play the main character.)

TWO PLANETS AND A SOLAR STORM: Yesterday, Oct. 18th, something behind the eastern edge of the sun exploded.
A massive cloud of plasma (CME) raced away from the blast site -- right into a bright conjunction. Jupiter and Mercury were less than 1 degree apart when the CME passed by.

If this meeting of planets happened in the night sky, it would have been widely observed. Because it was so close to the glaring sun, no human could see it. Only the orbiting Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, with its sun-blocking coronagraph, could record such a scene.

The CME missed everything. It sailed wide of Mercury, Jupiter, and Earth as well. Forecasters expect no geomagnetic storms as a result of the blast.

The Orionid Meteor Shower Puts on a Spectacular Celestial Show On 20th - 22nd October

One of the year's best sky shows will peak between Oct. 20 and 22, when the Orionid meteor shower reaches its best viewing. The meteors that streak across the sky are some of the fastest and brightest among meteor showers, because the Earth is hitting a stream of particles almost head on.

As many as 80 meteors an hour will dash across the starry sky.
Some Orionids will appear very fast and bright, since they can whiz by at up to 148,000 mph (238,000 km/h) in relative speed. That's just six kilometers an hour slower than the Leonids, the speediest show of the year.

Orionid meteors are visible from anywhere on Earth and can be seen anywhere across the sky.

The particles come from Comet 1P/Halley, better known as Halley’s Comet. This famous comet swings by Earth every 75 to 76 years, and as the comet makes its way around the sun, it leaves behind a trail of debris.

The Orionids are named after the direction from which they appear to radiate, which is near the constellation Orion (The Hunter). In October, Orion is best visible around 2 a.m. Skywatchers in 2017 will not have moonlight to contend with, as the first-quarter moon will have set long before the meteors put on their best show.

Astronomers Just Confirmed That Earth Has Two Moons

At the 49th Annual Division for Planetary Sciences Meeting in Provo, Utah, astronomers led by Vishnu Reddy at the University of Arizona confirm true nature of one of Earth's companions on its journey around the sun.

Was it a burned-out rocket booster, tumbling along a peculiar near-earth orbit around the sun, and only occasionally getting close enough to be studied with even the largest telescopes?
Not at all, as it turns out. While, based on previous observations, most astronomers had strongly suspected that object (469219) 2016 HO3 was an ordinary asteroid and not space junk, it took a team of astronomers led by Vishnu Reddy, assistant professor at the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, working with one of the world's largest telescopes, the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), on Mt. Graham in Southeastern Arizona, to learn the true nature of this near-Earth object.

2016 HO3 is a small near-Earth object (NEO) measuring no more than 100 meters (330 feet) across that, while orbiting the Sun, also appears to circle around the Earth as a "quasi-satellite." Only five quasi-satellites have been discovered so far, but 2016 HO3 is the most stable of them. The provenance of this object is unknown. On timescales of a few centuries, 2016 HO3 remains within 38-100 lunar distances from us.

Mysterious Dark Matter Galaxies

There has been another breakthrough discovery in our universe that is so weird that even the astronomer who discovered it can barely believe it exists. Pieter van Dokkum, Ph.D., Prof. of Astronomy at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, once placed a bet with a colleague that he could build a telescope that would have clear vision of very faint, but large, cosmic objects. Prof. van Dokkum won the bet. Now he has used his unique telescope of 48 telephoto lenses in an array at Cloudcroft, New Mexico, between Alamogordo and Roswell, to find what he calls the “Dark Twin” of our Milky Way galaxy. Looking like a smudge at 300 million light-years from Earth, the “Dark Twin” is 99.99% dark matter and only .1% matter of a few stars. He named the eerie and incomprehensible galaxy Dragonfly 44 and he found it with his breakthrough telescope that he calls Dragonfly.
