The Man Who Draws Meteors

Retired nuclear scientist, Michel Deconinck has been lucky enough to be one of the witnesses of this impressive event. Deconinck has observed meteors since 1975 and he has been a very active member of the international amateur astronomers community since then. He has been the chairman of the meteor section of the IUAA (International Union of Amateur Astronomers) for 10 years and he still works closely with the AAVSO (American Association of Variable Star Observers) as a consultant for the french speaking community.

On October, 30th, his trained keen eye allowed him to exactly remember the 4 second fireball that flew in front of him. Right after the event, Deconinck took his pencils and decided to water color the event. An avid drawer since childhood, Deconinck knew exactly where the fireball occurred in the sky and was able to place all the stars present in the scenery. In the foreground, we can see his personal observatory illuminated only by red LEDs. From his position, the fireball went from the variable star chi Cygni in the constellation Cygnus to the Vega (α Lyrae), the brightest star in the constellation of Lyra.

How To Organize Military Space

As both the U.S. military’s dependence on space and the threats posed to space systems have grown, some in Congress and the space community have called for sweeping changes in how space forces are organized, trained, and supported within the military. Both the House and Senate versions of the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2018 contain language that would significantly reorganize military space forces and authorities. This one-day symposium, hosted by the CSIS Aerospace Security Project, will explore how the military space enterprise should be organized given the increasing importance of space as a warfighting domain. Speakers will examine previous efforts to reorganize military space forces, problems that need to be addressed, and the pros and cons of different organizational models that have been tried in other parts of the military.

Adrian Liu | Accessing Cosmic Dawn Via The Hydrogen Epoch Of Reionization Array

Although it is a crucial pat of our cosmic timeline, Cosmic Dawn—when the first stars and galaxies formed and systematically reionized the intergalactic medium—remains relatively unexplored. By tracing the distribution and state of neutral hydrogen, 21cm cosmology promises to provide the first direct observations of Cosmic Dawn. The Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) is a low-frequency radio interferometer that is poised to realize this promise within the next few years by making large-scale observations of the 6 < z < 20 universe. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the scientific capabilities of HERA as well as a status update on high-z 21cm cosmology. Along the way, I will also describe our recent efforts in modeling foreground contaminants in the data, how machine learning can be used in our data analyses, and how 21cm cosmology may complement Cosmic Microwave Background observations with better constraints on reionization.

Weakening of Earth's magnetic field is a harbinger of increase in frequency and severity of natural disasters. Changes in the tension of Earth’s magnetic field are happening unevenly along the surface and reach maximum values in the Western Hemisphere, particularly in North and South America. This suggests that on these territories the strongest disasters should be expected in the coming years.

ESOcast 137 Light: Temperate Planet Orbiting Quiet Red Dwarf

A temperate planet has been discovered only 11 light-years from Earth by a team using ESO’s unique planet-hunting HARPS instrument. The new world has the designation Ross 128 b and is now the second-closest temperate planet to be detected after Proxima b. It is also the closest planet to be discovered orbiting an inactive red dwarf star, which may increase the likelihood that this planet could potentially sustain life. Ross 128 b will be a prime target for ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope, which will be able to search for biomarkers in the planet's atmosphere. Fireball Over Spain | 15th November 2017 @ 3:53 UT

On Nov. 15, at 4:52 local time (3:53 universal time) a very bright Leonid meteor was spotted over Spain. The event was produced by a fragment from Comet Temple-Tuttle that hit the atmosphere at about 260.000 km/h. The event begun at an altitude of around 146 km over the province of Cuenca and ended at a height of about 78 km. It was recorded in the framework of the SMART Project (University of Huelva) from the astronomical observatories of La Hita (Toledo), Calar Alto (Almería), La Sagra (Granada), Huelva and Sevilla.

Analysing The Astronauts

It’s one small step for man, one giant lie for mankind. If you cling to the notion that humans went anywhere near the Moon in 1969 then pay attention to today’s show. New analysis of the words of the most famous astronauts will leave most people in no doubt they are both liars. Attempts have been made to sideline moon hoax evidence. Moon landing mythologists will (rightly) argue that if photographs were filmed on Earth, that does not prove they never went. But it’s far less reasonable to use this argument about the astronauts own words, which reveal that neither of the Apollo 11 “moonwalkers” make any linguistic connection with having been on the lunar surface. Once this new analysis is realised with other well established evidence, only those with severe delusional psychosis will now believe that Armstrong went anywhere near the Moon.
