Two Planets Beyond Pluto?

New calculations by astronomers in Spain and the UK suggest that not one, but two unknown planets might exist in our solar system, beyond Pluto’s orbit.

The new calculations – from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM, Spain) and the University of Cambridge (UK) – are based on the orbital behavior of known objects at our solar system’s fringes. The most accepted theory of our solar system establishes that the orbits of extreme trans-Neptunian objects should be distributed randomly. By an observational bias, their paths must fulfill a series of characteristics.

For example, according to the established theory, objects beyond Pluto must have a semi-major axis – the axis which defines a planet’s farthest point from the sun – with a value close to 150 AU (or 150 times the distance between the Earth and the sun; by contrast, Pluto’s orbit has a semi-major axis of 39 AU). Plus, according to the theory, their orbits must be inclined to the plane of the solar system by almost 0°.

Yet this isn’t what astronomers observe a dozen of known small bodies beyond Pluto. The values of the semi-major axis are between 150 AU and 525 AU. The average inclination of their orbits is around 20°.

In other words, solar system theory doesn’t match what is observed. When that happens, astronomers scratch their heads and wonder why. These astronomers believe the reason is that there are unknown large planets out on the fringes of the solar system, waiting to be discovered.

Taurid Meteor Event | Spain | 20th November 2017 @ 4:30 UT

This bright North Taurid fireball was spotted over the center of Spain on 20 Nov. 2017 at 5:30 local time (4:30 universal time). It was produced by a fragment from Comet Encke that hit the atmosphere at about 110,000 km/h. The event overflew the province of Cuenca. It began at an altitude of about 104 km and ended at a height of around 54 km.

ESOcast 138 Light : VLT Discovers First Interstellar Asteroid Is Like Nothing Seen Before

For the first time ever astronomers have studied an asteroid that has entered the Solar System from interstellar space. Observations from ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile and other observatories around the world show that this unique object was travelling through space for millions of years before its chance encounter with our star system. It appears to be a dark, reddish, highly-elongated rocky or high-metal-content object.

Water On Mars? Streaks Visible From Space Are Actually Sand

Dark features on Mars previously considered evidence for subsurface flowing of water are interpreted by new research as granular flows, where grains of sand and dust slip downhill to make dark streaks, rather than the ground being darkened by seeping water.

'Super-Earth' Planet With Very Short Orbital Period Discovered

NASA's prolonged Kepler exoplanet-hunting mission, known as K2, has revealed the presence of another "super-Earth" alien world. The newly found planet, designated EPIC 246393474 b (or C12_3474 b), is more than five times more massive than the Earth and orbits its parent star in less than seven hours. The discovery is reported November 6 in a paper published on the arXiv pre-print repository.

Slowing Down Earth Rotation Will Cause Great Earthquakes In 2018

Earth's Rotation Is Mysteriously Slowing Down: Experts Predict Uptick In 2018 Earthquakes Scientists have found strong evidence that 2018 will see a big uptick in the number of large earthquakes globally. Earth's rotation, as with many things, is cyclical, slowing down by a few milliseconds per day then speeding up again. You and I will never notice this very slight variation in the rotational speed of Earth. However, we will certainly notice the result, an increase in the number of severe earthquakes. Geophysicists are able to measure the rotational speed of Earth extremely precisely, calculating slight variations on the order of milliseconds. Now, scientists believe a slowdown of the Earth's rotation is the link to an observed cyclical increase in earthquakes.
