Leonid Meteor Event | Spain | 18th November 2017 @ 3:35 UT

On Nov. 18, at 4:35 local time (3:35 universal time) a very bright Leonid meteor was spotted over Spain. The event was produced by a fragment from Comet Temple-Tuttle that hit the atmosphere at about 260.000 km/h. The event begun at an altitude of around 133 km over the province of Jaen and ended at a height of about 83 km over the province of Cordoba. It was recorded in the framework of the SMART Project (University of Huelva) from the astronomical observatories of La Hita (Toledo), Calar Alto (Almería), La Sagra (Granada), Huelva and Sevilla.

Supermoon Rising: The Full Cold Moon Marks The First & Last Full Supermoon Of 2017

The full moon falling on December 3, 2017, presents the year’s one and only full moon supermoon. Of 2017’s 12 full moons, only the December 2017 full moon comes close enough to Earth (222,443 miles or 357,987 km) to enjoy supermoon status.

The Moon will reach peak fullness at 10:47 am EST (15:47 UTC on Dec. 3).
December's full moon is called the Full Cold Moon.

Uncovering The Origins Of Galaxies' Halos

Using the Subaru Telescope atop Maunakea, researchers have identified 11 dwarf galaxies and two star-containing halos in the outer region of a large spiral galaxy 25 million light-years away from Earth. The findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal, provide new insight into how these 'tidal stellar streams' form around galaxies.

Voyager 1 and 2, humanity's farthest and longest-lived spacecraft, both carry a golden record. This phonograph record, a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk, contains sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. Imagined by Carl Sagan and his team, it is both a time capsule and a greeting intended for extraterrestrials. Forty years after NASA's Voyagers ventured into space, this cosmic greeting still has an impact on Earth as it causes us to think about what it means to be human and the possibility of life in the universe.

BAE, DARPA Develop New Space Warfare Command And Control

BAE has been awarded a $12.8 million DARPA contract to design a testbed for development of space warfare command and control systems.
The goal is to develop a sandbox that will allow the U.S. military, in particular the Joint Space Operations Center and the Joint Inter-Agency Combined Space Operations Center, to experiment with new technologies that will enable real-time space command and control.
