On January 9, 1643, the Italian astronomer Giovanni Riccioli saw a weird glowing light on the night side of Venus. He named it "The Ashen Light of Venus." Astronomers have seen it intermittently since then, while others who have looked for it have not been able to find it. To this day, no one really know what causes the Ashen Light. At first, people wanted to attribute it to the optical quality of telescopes. Today many believe that the light is associated with lightning storms on Venus. It could also be the result of solar radiation interacting with the atmosphere similar to how auroras happen on Earth. Whatever it is, it's been a scientific mystery for centuries..

Japanese Astronaut Grows In Space And Now Worries He Won't Fit In Capsule That Will Bring Him Back

An astronaut on the International Space Station has grown so much he's worried he won't get back down.

Lieutenant Norishige Kanai said that he has stretched out during his time on the International Space Station. The extra 9cm he has gained since he arrived on December has left him worried he won't squeeze into the small space of the Soyuz capsule, which is set to carry him back down to Earth.

New Year’s Comets

At any given time, astronomers with large and small telescopes are tracking faint and bright comets in our night sky. As 2018 began, EarthSky community photographers captured two different comets: Comet C/2016 R2 PANSTARRS (above and below) and Comet C/2017 T1 Heinze (bottom image). Neither comet was visible to the eye alone; all the images on this page were taken with the aid of telescopes. Will we have a bright comet in 2018? That would be exciting, and it’s not impossible, but – the fact is – no one can say for sure at this point. There are some comets known to be returning this year, however, that might become bright enough to be viewed without optical aid.

Conjunction Of Mercury and Saturn

Stargazers will be able to see four of the five visible planets in the early-morning sky worldwide. Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Mercury are about to align and they will be visible from Earth in a row along the horizon.

Visible planets are those that can be seen with the naked eye, as opposed to Uranus, Neptune and former planet Pluto, which require telescopes to be viewed.

Amateur astronomers will have to prepare their viewing spots as the astonishing sight will be visible until early February 2018.

Saturn, Mercury Conjunction
The planets Mercury and Saturn will be in conjunction on January 13, 2018, with Mercury passing some 0.7 degrees south of Saturn.

Before daybreak the next few mornings – January 12, 13 and 14 – try catching the close pairing of Mercury and Saturn as the predawn darkness gives way to morning dawn. Look in the sunrise direction. The lit side of the waning crescent moon will be pointing in the direction of Mercury and Saturn, with these two planets sitting quite close to the sunrise point on your horizon.

Japanese Astronaut Says Sorry After Claiming He 'Grew' 3.5 Inches In Space

Japanese astronaut Norishige Kanai apologized on Wednesday for suggesting he had "grown" 3.5 inches (9 centimeters) while at the International Space Station (ISS).
Kanai, 41, had only been on the ISS for a few weeks as part of a six-month mission when he tweeted he had some "important news" to share.
