Light Shed On Mystery Space Radio Pulses

Astronomers have fresh insight on a mysterious source of recurring radio pulses from space.
Fast radio bursts (FRB) are one of the most persistent puzzles in astronomy. While usually short-lived, one source in the sky was sending out repeated flashes.
Now, a team says the strange emission could be caused by a dead star with an exceptionally powerful magnetic field.

A 360-degree movie immerses viewers into a simulation of the center of our Galaxy. This visualization was enabled by data from Chandra and other telescopes and allows viewers to control their own exploration of this region. From the vantage point of the Milky Way's supermassive black hole, Sgr A*, the viewer can see about 25 Wolf-Rayet stars (white, twinkling objects) as they continuously eject stellar winds (black to red to yellow color scale). These winds collide with each other, and then some of this material (yellow blobs) spirals towards Sgr A*. The movie shows two simulations, each of which start around 350 years in the past and span 500 years. The first simulation shows Sgr A* in a calm state, while the second contains a more violent Sgr A* that is expelling its own material, thereby turning off the accretion of clumped material (yellow blobs) that is so prominent in the first portion.

James Webb Space Telescope

Time-Lapse : Nine Months @ NASA Johnson In Two Minutes

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope spent much of 2017 at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where it underwent critical cryogenic testing inside Chamber A, a massive thermal vacuum chamber at the center. This time-lapse video compresses Webb’s approximately nine-month stay at Johnson to about two minutes.

One of the tests performed on Webb inside Chamber A was an important alignment check of the telescope’s 18 primary mirror segments, to make sure all of the gold-plated, hexagonal segments acted like a single, monolithic mirror in a space-like environment. This test also showed Webb’s science instruments were properly aligned with its mirrors and could detect simulated “starlight” within the chamber.

Members of the media were invited to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston on Jan. 10, to hear about the results of recent cryogenic vacuum tests on the James Webb Space Telescope, and the next steps on the observatory’s path to space.

Webb was tested as a complete optical system in Chamber A at Johnson, which mimics the space environment the telescope will experience during its mission. Built in 1965 to conduct thermal-vacuum testing on the Apollo command and service modules, Chamber A is the largest structure of its kind in the world and is a listed National Historic Landmark.

The James Webb Space Telescope is the world’s premier infrared space observatory of the next decade. Webb will help to solve mysteries of our solar system, look to distant worlds orbiting other stars, and probe the mysterious structures and origins of our universe and our place in it. Webb is an international program led by NASA with its partners, the ESA (European Space Agency) and the Canadian Space Agency.

Charles Lamoureux , Born and raised in the heart of the Canadian prairies, Winnipeg Manitoba. I grew up in small francophone community in central Winnipeg called St Boniface. I graduated from a hospital nursing program at the age of 21 and I decided to leave my home and travel the world. I worked as a critical care nurse in 5 different countries when I joined a traveling nurse organization and had the opportunity to work in 30 hospitals over 14 year period. Over a decade later I decided to move back to Canada and relocate to one of the most beautiful cities in the world ,Vancouver BC. I became very interested in UFOlogy later in my life while living in the Pacific Northwest where I first witnessed a object I can only call a UFO.. This experience changed me from skeptic to believer in a very short period of time and the realization these unknown objects in our skies should not be there. A couple years later and after a large investment in video and night vision technology, I began filming variety different objects in the night sky all from the comfort of my home overlooking downtown Vancouver. Today I work as a medical consultant for large medical device company
After 8 years of watching the skies I know today people need to know about the phenomena and learn to see them for themselves. I have been very fortunate to be a part of this endeavor to uncover the truth behind the UFO/UAP phenomena.

Flight Through The Orion Nebula In Visible & Infrared Light

This visualization explores the Orion Nebula using both visible and infrared light. The sequence begins with a wide-field view of the sky showing the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy, then zooms down to the scale of the Orion Nebula. The visible light observation (from the Hubble Space Telescope) and the infrared light observation (from the Spitzer Space Telescope) are compared first in two-dimensional images, and then in three-dimensional models.

As the camera flies into the star-forming region, the sequence cross-fades back and forth between the visible and infrared views. The glowing gaseous landscape has been illuminated and carved by the high energy radiation and strong stellar winds from the massive hot stars in the central cluster. The infrared observations generally show cooler temperature gas at a deeper layer of the nebula that extends well beyond the visible image. In addition, the infrared showcases many faint stars that shine primarily at longer wavelengths. The higher resolution visible observations show finer details including the wispy bow shocks and tadpole-shaped proplyds. In this manner, the movie illustrates the contrasting features uncovered by multi-wavelength astronomy.

On This Day In Space | January 11th 1787 : William Herschel Discovers Two Moons Of Uranus

On January 11, 1787, the English astronomer Sir William Herschel discovered two moons at Uranus! Oberon and Titania were the first two Uranian moons ever discovered. The finding came just six years after Herschel actually discovered the planet itself. By now astronomers have discovered 27 moon at Uranus, and all of them are named after characters from the works of William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. Titania is the largest moon of Uranus and is named after the queen of the fairies in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Oberon is the second-largest and is named after the mythical king of the fairies in the same story.

A supermassive black hole has been caught "snacking" not once, but twice, in the J1354 galaxy about 800 million light years from Earth.

The black hole's two-course meal was served up from a stream of gas and dust from a collision with another galaxy in the past.

Scientists used X-rays from Chandra and optical data from other telescopes to track the black hole's behavior and diet.

The researchers estimate that the black hole went about 100,000 years between snacks, with a nap of inactivity in between.

Astronomers studying this galaxy want to better understand how black holes, including the one in the Milky Way, grow over time.

Astronomers have caught a supermassive black hole in a distant galaxy snacking on gas and then "burping" — not once, but twice.

The dining galaxy is known by its abbreviated name, J1354, and is about 800 million light years from Earth. Scientists used observations from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope, as well as the ground-based optical telescopes to track both the behavior and diet of this monster-sized black hole.

The Chandra data revealed a bright, point-like source of X-ray emission at the center of J1354, a telltale sign of the presence of a black hole containing millions or billions of times more mass than our sun. The X-ray data also provide evidence that the supermassive black hole is embedded in a heavy veil of gas.

The researchers found evidence that in the past the supermassive black hole consumed large amounts of gas while blasting off an outflow of high-energy particles. Eventually, this outflow turned off, and then turned back on with another black hole snack about 100,000 later.

Where did the black hole get its two-course meal? The data point to the cosmic crumbs left behind from a collision with another galaxy long ago. This collision left a clumpy stream of gas and dust strewn between the two galaxies. As clumps from this stream wandered too close, they were consumed by the supermassive black hole.

Scientists think our Milky Way's own black hole has experienced at least one similar burp of its own. By understanding how a black hole like J1354 feeds, astronomers are hoping to learn more about supermassive black holes and how they grow both near and far.

World's Biggest Deep-Sea Volcanic Eruption In 100 Years Has Occured Near New Zealand

The world's largest deep ocean volcanic eruption in a century happened 1000 kilometres north east of the North Island.

A gigantic pumice raft - 400 square kilometres in size - that was found floating in the ocean near New Zealand in 2012 showed the underwater eruption had occurred.

The "complex" eruption involved 14 aligned vents causing a "massive rupture". Named Havre.

Havre, which had been discovered about 600 miles from New Zealand's North Island just a decade earlier, sent a plume from 700 meters below sea level to the surface.

Astronomers To Build Space Telescope To Explore Nearby Stars

In 2021, a spacecraft the size of a Cheerios box will carry a small telescope into Earth orbit on an unusual mission. Its task is to monitor the flares and sunspots of small stars to assess how habitable the space environment is for planets orbiting them.
The spacecraft, known as the Star-Planet Activity Research CubeSat, or SPARCS for short, is a new NASA-funded space telescope. The mission, including spacecraft design, integration and resulting science, is led by Arizona State University's School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE).

A French Nano Satellite To Unveil The Mysteries Of Beta Pictoris

PicSat will be launched into Earth orbit on 12 January 2018 to study the star Beta Pictoris, its exoplanet and its famous debris disk, thanks to a small telescope 5 cm in diameter. The nanosatellite has been designed and built in a record time of just three years by scientists and engineers at the Paris Observatory and the CNRS, with support from the Universite PSL, the French space agency CNES, the European Research Council and the MERAC Foundation.
