Tess The Latest Exoplanet Finder – In Final Preparations For Launch

Next month, SpaceX is set to launch the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS, is the next step in humanity’s ongoing effort to discover and characterize exoplanets, including planets that might host life. The spacecraft is currently scheduled to launch on a Falcon 9 on April 16 from SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral.

The TESS project has its origins in a concept study at MIT in the mid-2000’s and was submitted as an Astrophysics Explorer mission finalist in 2012, as a successor program to Kepler, which was at the time in its primary mission.

Chemical Sleuthing Unravels Possible Path To The Formation Of Life’s Building Blocks In Space

Scientists have used lab experiments to retrace the chemical steps leading to the creation of complex hydrocarbons in space, showing pathways to forming 2-D carbon-based nanostructures in a mix of heated gases.

The latest study, which featured experiments at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), could help explain the presence of pyrene, which is a chemical compound known as a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and similar compounds in some meteorites.

On March 6, 1986, the Soviet Union's Vega 1 spacecraft flew by Halley's Comet. Vega 1 was the first of five missions to fly by Halley's Comet in the same month. This fleet of spacecraft has been called the "Halley Armada." Because Halley's Comet only comes around once every 75 years, space agencies around the world took advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Before Vega 1 went to the comet, it first flew by Venus to drop off a lander. It then used Venus to perform a gravitational assist maneuver, which put it right on track to fly by Halley's Comet.

SpacePod : Hayabusa 2 Takes 1st Image Of Ryugu

Hayabusa 2 was launched on December 3, 2014 aboard an H-2A rocket, and is a follow up to Japan's first Hayabusa spacecraft, which rendezvoused with NEO Itokawa in 2005 and returned samples of that asteroid to Earth in 2010, the first spacecraft ever to do so, although the sample size was much much less than expected, only a grain of dust. Hayabusa 2 aims to address weak points identified in that mission and return a bigger sample back to Earth.

The recent discovery of the Pylos Combat Agate in a Mycenaean shaft-grave tomb dating to 1500 BC may be one of the most significant archaeological and artistic finds in decades, perhaps in centuries. Cosmic Rays In The Earth Moon System Are Peaking @ Levels Never Before Seen In The Space Age

THE WORSENING COSMIC RAY SITUATION: Cosmic rays are bad–and they're getting worse. That's the conclusion of a new paper just published in the research journal Space Weather. The authors, led by Prof. Nathan Schwadron of the University of New Hampshire, show that radiation from deep space is dangerous and intensifying faster than previously predicted.

The story begins four years ago when Schwadron and colleagues first sounded the alarm about cosmic rays. Analyzing data from the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER) instrument onboard NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), they found that cosmic rays in the Earth-Moon system were peaking at levels never before seen in the Space Age. The worsening radiation environment, they pointed out, was a potential peril to astronauts, curtailing how long they could safely travel through space.
