Send Your Name To The Sun With The Parker Solar Probe
Published 6th March 2018
The captain would like a word.
NASA's historic Parker Solar Probe mission will launch in summer 2018 to travel through the Sun's atmosphere, closer to the solar surface than any spacecraft before it, facing brutal heat and radiation conditions - and you can send your name along for the ride. To commemorate humanity's first visit to the star we live with, NASA invites the public to submit their names to be included on a microchip headed to the Sun aboard NASA's Parker Solar Probe.

What Ancient African Huts Reveal About Earth's Magnetic Flips
Published 7th March 2018
For the last 170 years, a mysteriously weak patch of Earth’s magnetic field has grown in size, causing some geologists to think that the planet is gearing up to flip its magnetic poles. Now, buildings that were ritually burned down in Africa more than a thousand years ago are adding vital new clues to the case.

Exoplanet Everests May Be Detectable When Giant Telescopes Come Online
Published 6th March 2018
The Himalayas distort Earth’s surface only about as much as a human hair would that of a billiard ball. Discerning such a minute effect on a planet orbiting another star might seem laughable—akin to perceiving the hair on the ball, with the ball on the moon. Nevertheless, two astronomers have proposed a way to detect mountains and other surface features on exoplanets. And as mind-blowing as that may seem, the researchers have even loftier goals in mind.

Zooming in & Panning Across On Alma's View Of The Orion Nebula
Published 7th March 2018
This video starts with a broad view of the sky and zooms in on the familiar constellation of Orion (The Hunter). We then get a closeup view of the Orion Nebula star formation region. In the final sequence we see the strange red filaments of cool gas that ALMA has revealed.
This pan sequence shows part of the famous Orion Nebula star formation region. At the start we see the bright Trapezium Cluster of hot young stars and then see the strange pattern of narrow filaments of cold gas, which appear red in this view from ALMA. The background blue image, which shows the stars and other features, comes from the HAWK-I camera on ESO's Very Large Telescope.
New data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and other telescopes have been used to create a stunning image showing a web of filaments in the Orion Nebula. These features appear red-hot and fiery, but in reality are so cold that astronomers must use telescopes like ALMA to observe them.

On This Day In Space | 7th March 1962 | NASA Launches Orbiting Solar Observatory
Published 7th March 2018
On March 7, 1962, NASA launched the first Orbiting Solar Observatory. Eight of these satellites were launched between 1962 and 1975 to study the 11-year solar cycle. Each of the satellites had two main parts called the "wheel" and the "sail." The sail contained solar panels and instruments that took measurements of the sun. The sail was mounted onto the wheel, which could rotate to make sure that the instruments were pointing in the right direction. The satellites measured things like UV light, X-rays, and gamma radiation. The data was recorded on tape and transmitted to Earth via FM telemetry.
