Asteroid Bennu : Target Of Sample Return Mission

Bennu is an asteroid that whizzes past Earth every few years. In fact, there is a chance — though a slim one — that the asteroid will collide with Earth in the near future (less than 200 years from now).

Because it flies so close to our planet, the near-Earth object (NEO) is the target of a NASA mission to collect a sample and return it to Earth. Scientists think the space rock may contain the building blocks of life.

On This Day In Space | 13th March 1781 | Uranus Discovered

On March 13, 1781, Sir William Herschel discovered Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun. Before Herschel discovered Uranus, other astronomers had seen it before, but no one realized it was planet. Instead, they thought it was a star. Herschel actually thought he was looking at a comet. Because it was moving, he figured it couldn't have been a star. Herschel and other astronomers spent two years debating about whether it was a comet or a planet. In 1783, Herschel finally announced that Uranus was, in fact, a planet. But Uranus didn't receive its name until 1850. Herschel wanted to name it George's Star after King George III, but astronomers outside of England weren't cool with that. Ultimately, the German astronomer Johann Bode named it Uranus after the ancient Greek god of the sky. While the international astronomy community liked that name better than George's Star, the planet was hereby destined to forever be the butt of all solar system jokes.

Lava Tube Fly-Through

The "Cueva de los Verdes" lava tube in Lanzarote, Spain, is one of the world's largest volcanic cave complexes with a total length of about 8 km.

Geology experts from ESA's Pangaea-X campaign mapped most of the lava tube system as part of a project supported by local authorities Cabildo of Lanzarote and the University of Padova, Italy. The data was acquired in November 2017 by Leica Geosystems.

The map comes alive in great detail in 3D, helping institutions to protect the subterranean environment. The map also provides scientific data to study the origins of the tube and its peculiar formations.

Pangaea-X is a test campaign that brings together geology, high-tech survey equipment and space exploration. Learn more about the science and technology behind this campaign visiting
The central flash, caused by focussing of the starlight by deep layers in the moon's atmosphere – about 10 km above surface, can be seen half way through the occultation under the right observing conditions.

Taking advantage of improved measurements of the star's position and a few hundred more stars, provided by Gaia, the Lucky Star team has coordinated a campaign to observe this occultation.

A collaboration of professional as well as amateur astronomers observed the phenomenon at more than a hundred stations across Europe, North Africa and North America. The improved prediction of the best locations to observe, based on the specially released, preliminary data from Gaia DR2, led to twenty-five successful detections of the central flash, from Spain and Portugal to the south of France and the north of Italy.

The astronomers are now busy analysing the data collected during this campaign to learn more about the atmosphere of Triton.

Hubble Finds Relic Galaxy Close To Home

The adventuring cinema archeologist Indiana Jones would be delighted to find a long-sought relic in his own backyard. Astronomers have gotten lucky enough to achieve such a quest. They identified a very rare and odd assemblage of stars that has remained essentially unchanged for the past 10 billion years. The diffuse stellar island provides valuable new insights into the origin and evolution of galaxies billions of years ago.

As far as galaxy evolution goes, this object is clearly a case of “arrested development.” The galaxy, NGC 1277, started its life with a bang long ago, ferociously churning out stars 1,000 times faster than seen in our own Milky Way today. But it abruptly went quiescent as the baby boomer stars aged and grew ever redder. Though Hubble has seen such “red and dead” galaxies in the early universe, one has never been conclusively found nearby. Where the early galaxies are so distant, they are just red dots in Hubble deep-sky images. NGC 1277 offers a unique opportunity to see one up close and personal.

The sunset planet show is about to get even better. On March 18th, the slender crescent Moon will join Venus and Mercury for a loose but beautiful conjunction in the evening sky. The three will form a slightly bent line less than 8 degrees long--about the size of the bowl of the Big Dipper.

Astronomers Discover Two Of The Most Powerful Quasars In The Known Universe

Using VST ATLAS and WISE surveys astronomers have identified two new bright high-redshift quasars. The newly found quasi-stellar objects, designated VST-ATLAS J158.6938-14.4211 and VST-ATLAS J332.8017-32.1036, could be helpful in improving our understanding of the evolution of the universe. The finding is reported March 4 in a paper published on arXiv.org.

Quasars with high redshift (over 6.0) are of special interest for astronomers because their ultraviolet light is absorbed by the neutral hydrogen along the line of sight; thus, they can be used to probe the intergalactic medium in the early universe. They are the most luminous and most distant, compact objects in the observable universe.

As noted in the study, VST-ATLAS J158.6938-14.4211 (J158-14 for short) has a redshift of 6.07, while VST-ATLAS J332.8017-32.1036 (J332-32 for short) was found at a redshift of 6.32. J158-14 and J332-32 have magnitudes of 19.4 and 19.7 respectively.

Moreover, the researchers have conducted a preliminary estimate of the black hole masses powering the two quasars. According to the paper, J158-14 has a black hole with a mass of about 1.8 billion solar masses and when it comes to J332-32, its black hole is approximately two billion times more massive than the sun.

As the solar minimum continued, subfreezing temperatures and snowfalls were still breaking records in February. Canada and the US experienced another arctic blast from the now split 'polar vortex', pushing temperatures in Canada to -62°C and covering much of the northern, central and eastern U.S. with heavy snow. The cold blast also descended to Europe and parts of Asia. This 'Beast from the East' brought heavy snow to much of Europe with some parts colder than the Arctic!

China was hit by heavy snow, disrupting transportation and flights, while Japan had one of its worst winters in decades. Snow also blanketed unusual places like the UAE and Morocco.

Heavy rain caused destructive floods in Indonesia, New Zealand, Cyprus and deadly mudslides in South America, while seventy rivers overflowed from the Great Lakes to Texas. Record-breaking size hail pounded Argentina, while California and Saudi Arabia were pounded by hailstorms that caused damage and disrupted traffic for hours.

The Ring of Fire continued with increased activity, volcanoes and mud volcanoes that had been dormant for decades awoke with a vengeance, triggering evacuations and disrupting the flights of thousands of travelers. Taiwan, Papua New Guinea and Mexico were also shaken this past month by significant earthquakes as the the cosmic ray grand maximum approaches.

Dry tides are becoming more common all around the world, while mass fish deaths and strandings continue to baffle scientists.

Meteor fireballs put on quite a show again this month, while the reports of unexplained loud "booms" increased all over the world.

B-52 Bomber Shot Down by a UFO

Here’s an interesting UFO story in Vietnam revolves around a crashed B-52 bomber. The paper trail for this story is vague, but it remains a common tale in UFO circles.

The incident is a part of Project Grudge, a US Air Force investigation of UFO sightings which supposedly ended in 1951. But UFO researchers believe that it was still operating in Vietnam.
In the 1970s, Green Beret Captain William English was assigned to Laos to investigate a downed B-52 bomber. The aircraft was lost under mysterious circumstances, and the US Air Force was eager to retrieve evidence from it.

Captain English successfully found the airplane, which seemed in unusually good shape. The only damage on the bomber was normal damage expected from a crash landing. When English opened the hatch, he found all the crew still strapped in their seats but horribly disfigured and mutilated. There was no other damage in the cockpit.

English collected samples and turned the bodies in for autopsy. But after the incident, the Laos government deported him. Whether or not this story is true, it is an interesting tale from the end of the Vietnam War.
