How Bacteria That Makes Electricity Could Help "Us" Colonize Mars

Humans aren’t the only ones who have harnessed the power of electricity. Some bacteria do this, too, by producing structures that extend from their surface like wires to transfer electrons over distances. Now, scientists at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley are exploring this phenomenon to see if they can make use of these special microbes, called Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, to perform essential functions on future space missions — from generating electricity to treating wastewater or producing medicines.

James Abbott is the author of the Outsider's Guide to UFOs. Following a short scholarship to Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, James completed a Bachelor’s degree in Politics and Economics at the University of York and later researched a Master’s thesis at the University of Cambridge on global trade in the aerospace industry. His career has encompassed time in the aerospace sector, in marketing, in education, and in commercial research. He’s written and contributed to around a dozen academic books, and countless lengthy reports. His greatest professional love is research; having the view that there aren’t that many jobs in which you get paid for having fun, but that’s what research is like.

So why UFOs of all things? The answer is a long one, but it boils down to this: Like almost everyone else, James gets hooked by a good mystery, and UFOs are perhaps the greatest mystery of all; one which is in desperate need of being properly investigated. He lives with his wife in Yorkshire, England, where rabbits are the only alien menace. Or so he believes! UFOs may or may not be of this Earth and time, but the huge job of trying to nail them down is incredibly fascinating.

Stanton Friedman gave his Keynote Presentation FLYING SAUCERS AND SCIENCE at the 2017 Ozark Mountain UFO Conference in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. After 58 years of study and investigation, nuclear physicist Stanton T. Friedman has summarized his views about flying saucers. He is convinced that the evidence is overwhelming that SOME UFOs are intelligently controlled extraterrestrial spacecraft, that the subject represents a Cosmic Watergate, that there are no good objections to these conclusions, and that flying saucer reality and its cover-up is the biggest story of the past millennium. His lecture covers 5 large scale scientific studies that most people are not aware of. He reviews the four major reasons leaders in the scientific and journalistic communities have not yet jumped on the pro-UFO bandwagon.

He covers landing trace cases and the star map seen by Betty Hill on board a flying saucer and the scientific investigation of it by Marjorie Fish. That work focuses on two sun-like Stars (Zeta 1 and Zeta 2 Reticuli) only 39.3 light years from Earth, only an eighth of a light year apart from each other, and at least a billion years older than the sun. He reviews possible fission and fusion rockets on some of which he has worked and notes how close we, a primitive society whose major activity is tribal warfare, are to interstellar travel. No wonder aliens are visiting!

Dr. David G. Stork | HAL's Legacy: 2001's Computer As Dream & Reality

Along with celebrating 50 years of software engineering, we can also celebrate the premiere of one of the most famous science fiction movies in history, 2001: A Space Odyssey. One of the central characters in the movie was the supercomputer HAL, the most powerful computer imagined at that time. Possessed knowledge superior to that of a human, HAL controlled the spaceship, found solutions to the most complex problems, played chess with the astronauts, and served them continuously. Then something went wrong. Why? Was it a bug in the system, or a problem intrinsic to AI? This is the core question.

50 years later, we might frame the questions differently: Would it be possible to design a computer today that could reach or outreach HAL’s capabilities? Can today’s software do what HAL did? What are the ethical questions and dangers of AI in such a context?

In this interactive talk Dr. David Stork will discuss these questions and explore the ethical concerns and potential deep dangers of artificial intelligence.

Dr. David G. Stork works in pattern recognition, machine learning, computer vision and computational sensing and imaging and is a pioneer in the application of rigorous computer image analysis to problems in the history and interpretation of fine art.

He is a graduate in physics from MIT and the University of Maryland and has held faculty positions in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineer, Statistics, Neuroscience, Psychology and Art and Art History variously at Wellesley and Swarthmore Colleges and Clark, Boston and Stanford Universities.

Dr. Stork is a Fellow of IEEE, the Optical Society of America, SPIE, the International Association for Pattern Recognition, the International Academy, Research and Industry Association, the Society for Imaging Science and Technology, and a Senior Member of the Association for Computing Machinery. He is the editor of “HAL’s Legacy, 2001’s Computer as Dream and Reality” which reflects upon science fiction's most famous computer and explores the relationship between science fantasy and technological fact.
