    NASA JPL

    Insight L5 Mission Briefing

    Published 21st November 2018

    PART 1: Engineering Briefing

Prior to landing on the Red Planet NASA discusses the engineering that went into the InSight lander. Launched on May 5, InSight marks NASA's first Mars landing since the Curiosity rover in 2012. The landing will kick off a two-year mission in which InSight will become the first spacecraft to study Mars' deep interior. Its data also will help scientists understand the formation of all rocky worlds, including our own.

InSight is being followed to Mars by two miniature NASA spacecraft, jointly called Mars Cube One (MarCO), the first deep-space mission for CubeSats. If MarCO makes its planned Mars flyby, it will attempt to relay data from InSight as it enters the planet's atmosphere and lands.

InSight and MarCO flight controllers will monitor the spacecraft's entry, descent and landing from Mission Control at JPL.

    Speakers include:

    - Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator
    - Tom Hoffman, InSight project manager at JPL
    - Stu Spath, InSight Program Manager, Lockheed Martin Science
    - Rob Grover, Entry, Descent and Landing (EDL) Phase Lead for InSight, NASA-JPL
    - Anne Marinan, MarCO-B Mission Manager, NASA-JPL

    PART 2: Science Overview

    Speakers include:

Lori Glaze, Acting Director of NASA’s Planetary Science Division, NASA Headquarters
Bruce Banerdt, InSight Principal Investigator, NASA-JPL
Sue Smrekar, InSight Deputy Principal Investigator, NASA-JPL
Philippe Laudet, SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure) Project Manager, CNES (French

    The Super-Earth Around Barnard's Star

    Streamed & Published 21st November 2018

Located in the constellation Ophiuchus, there is an unremarkable red dwarf star some six light years away. After the three stars of the Alpha Centauri system, this is the closest star to us.

Known as Barnard’s star, it is invisible to the unaided eye. It’s name comes from it’s discoverer E.E. Barnard, who in 1916 noticed that this star was wobbling back and forth by some 10.3 arcseconds every year. Astronomers thought there must be some unseen companion orbiting around it, but for over a century, couldn’t find it. Was it a dim star? Or was it a planet? Why was this star wobbling?

    Now, we know.

Astronomers Discover Our Sun’s Long-lost Identical 'Twin'

    Published 21st November 2018

In a new study, astronomers from the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences in Portugal, using the latest methods and the latest data from the Gaia space telescope, found the “twin” of the Sun.

Scientists discovered an almost identical twin to our sun HD 186302 at a distance of 184 light years from Earth, which could appear with the Sun from a single star-forming cloud 4.57 billion years ago. The "twins" have similar size, surface temperature, spectral class and chemical composition. Astronomers will continue to research HD 186302 to learn more about the past of the Sun, as well as to find new Earth-like planets.

Stars form in giant clouds of dust and gas, the mass of which is hundreds of thousands of times greater than the sun. At the same time, most of the luminaries are born in pairs - at a distance of 500 astronomical units (about 75 billion km) from each other. According to expert estimates, up to 85% of all stars are in binary, and perhaps even in triple or quadruple systems. Given this, scientists have always thought it strange that the sun does not have a pair.

Doomed Star Is On the Brink Of A Massive Supernova Explosion

    Published 20th November 2018

University of Sydney astronomers, working with international colleagues, have found a star system like none seen before in our galaxy.

The scientists believe one of the stars—about 8000 light years from Earth—is the first known candidate in the Milky Way to produce a dangerous gamma-ray burst, among the most energetic events in the universe, when it explodes and dies.

The system, comprising a pair of scorchingly luminous stars, was nicknamed Apep by the team after the serpentine Egyptian god of chaos. One star is on the brink of a massive supernova explosion.

The findings, published today in Nature Astronomy, are controversial as no gamma-ray burst has ever been detected within our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

Yet in the southern constellation of Norma, nestled just beneath Scorpio's tail, astronomers have discovered this uniquely beautiful star system.

At its heart, wrapped in an elegantly sculpted plume of dust and gas, lies a powerful binary pair. The two hot, luminous stars—known to astronomers as Wolf-Rayets - orbit each other every hundred years or so, according to the research conducted at the Sydney Institute for Astronomy.

This orbital dance is embossed on a fast wind streaming off the stars. Using spectroscopy, the astronomers have measured the velocity of the stellar winds as fast as 12 million kilometres an hour, about 1 percent the speed of light.

Full Beaver Moon Rising - Stargazers Look for a Dazzling Full Moon in Taurus Tonight

    Published 22nd November 2018

Stargazers prepare for dazzling Moon! In 2018, the Full Moon for November rises Thanksgiving night!

November's Full Moon, the so-called Beaver’s Moon or Frost Moon, is just around the corner. Astronomers are expecting the lunar orb to reach its Full Moon peak at around 5.39am GMT (UTC). That means that – for the Americas – the night of November 22 will feature this month’s fullest moon.

Once this happens, the sunlit face of the Moon will be 100 percent illuminated, bathing the Earth in its cold, bright glow. But if you take a moment to look at the night skies right now you will notice the Moon is already looking spectacularly large and bright.

This is because the so-called Waxing Gibbous Moon is already more than 98 percent illuminated tonight. The Moon always appear full up to a day or two before and after the Full Moon.

The Full Moon happens when the Moon sits behind the Earth and faces the Sun head-on.

On Nov. 22-23, despite the glare from the full or nearly full Moon, you might be able to spot two major signposts in the constellation Taurus the Bull. Look first for the bright star Aldebaran, part of the V-shaped face of the Bull. Then look for the dipper-shaped Pleiades star cluster, in the Bull’s shoulder.
