    Hubblecast 119 : Hubble’s 29th anniversary

    Published 17th April 2019

On 18 April 2019 Hubble is celebrating its 29th year in space. For this anniversary NASA and ESA dedicated a small amount of its precious observation time to take a look at the beautiful Southern Crab Nebula. This beautiful nebula is created by the ejected material of a red giant, which is in close interaction with a white dwarf star.

This animation takes the viewer on a journey to explore how the Southern Crab Nebula came to form its iconic shape.

This video takes the viewer on a journey into the 29th anniversary image NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, the Southern Crab Nebula. This peculiar nebula, which exhibits nested hourglass-shaped structures, has been created by the interaction between a pair of stars at its centre. The unequal pair consists of a red giant and a white dwarf. The red giant is shedding its outer layers in the last phase of its life before it too lives out its final years as a white dwarf.

Lyrid Meteors Put On Celestial Fireworks Show

    Published 18th April 2019

The annual Lyrid meteor shower is active each year from about April 16 to 25. In 2019, the peak of this shower – which tends to come in a burst and usually lasts for less than a day – is expected to fall on the morning of April 23.

No matter where you are on Earth, the greatest number of meteors tend to fall during the few hours before dawn.

The Universe’s First Type Of Molecule Is Found @ Last

    Published 17th April 2019

Scientists on the airborne observatory SOFIA detected the first type of molecule that ever formed in the universe. They found the combination of helium and hydrogen, called helium hydride, in a planetary nebula near the constellation Cygnus. This discovery confirms a key part of our basic understanding of the early universe and how it evolved over billions of years into the complex chemistry of today.

    Infrared Universe: Galactic Center

    Published 19th April 2019

The densely packed starfields at our galaxy's center are hidden behind dust clouds and only become visible in infrared light. In the near-infrared they begin to appear, but are reddened for much the same reason that sunlight turns red when filtered through a smoky cloud. The dense dust clouds begin to stand out at longer infrared wavelengths, taking on changing rainbows of color depending on which parts of the spectrum contribute to the image. The very coldest, densest dust will only start to glow at the very longest wavelengths of light, rendered in red in the far-infrared image in this sequence.

Far-infrared: At these long infrared wavelengths, the hottest dust glows blue, while the coldest is red.

Mid-infrared: Some of the hottest dust clouds begin to glow as one looks deeper into the infrared spectrum.

Near-infrared: The myriad stars and shadows caused by dust clouds are more vivid at shorter wavelengths of light.

    ABOUT THE INFRARED UNIVERSE COLLECTION
The human eye can only see visible light, but objects give off a variety of wavelengths of light. To see an object as it truly exists, we would ideally look at its appearance through the full range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Telescopes show us objects as they appear emitting different energies of light, with each wavelength conveying unique information about the object. The Webb Space Telescope will study infrared light from celestial objects with much greater clarity and sensitivity than ever before.

Dr. Belinda Wilkes | Twenty Years Of Science With The Chandra X-Ray Observatory

    Published 19th April 2019

NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory is celebrating its 20th year of operation in 2019. Chandra, operated for NASA by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, continues to be an indispensable tool for expanding the frontiers of our knowledge in space. No other observatory has Chandra's capability for high-resolution X-ray imaging of cosmic sources on a sub-arcsecond scale, a critical feature for multi-wavelength investigations ranging across astrophysics, from planetary atmospheres to clusters of galaxies. From the discovery of an X-ray jet in its first targeted source, Chandra continues to make discoveries that impact the full range of astrophysics. Chandra uniquely pinpoints the youngest stars buried amongst the gas and dust of star-forming regions, observes the explosions as massive stars run out of fuel and tracks the evolution of the resulting supernova remnants, and measures the complex structure of the hot gas which dominates the baryonic matter in the largest gravitationally bound celestial structures, clusters of galaxies, tracing their turbulent past and present. Dr. Belinda Wilkes will present a tour of Chandra and some of its exciting discoveries, from launch on the shuttle Columbia commanded by Eileen Collins, the first female commander, to current work such as Chandra's first X-ray detection of GW170817, the merging neutron stars detected in gravitational waves by LIGO, which it continues to track its now fading X-ray emission to distinguish between competing models.

Vikki Meadows| Characterizing Terrestrial Exoplanets For Habitability & Life

    Published 19th April 2019

One of the most exciting and interdisciplinary frontiers in exoplanet science is the search for habitable planets and life beyond the solar system. Recently discovered planets, especially Earth-sized planets orbiting nearby M dwarfs, will provide intriguing near-term targets for large ground-based telescopes and the James Webb Space Telescope, while even larger telescopes are planned to directly image and explore the environments of worlds around stars like our Sun. These telescopes may detect signs of habitability and its loss, as well as biosignatures—planetary features that suggest a biological origin. However, our ability to accurately interpret these features will depend on our understanding of planetary evolution and processes, and environmental context. This talk will provide an overview of the path to terrestrial exoplanet characterization, describing interdisciplinary research by NASA’s Virtual Planetary Laboratory team to understand how to identify habitable planets, and discriminate true biosignatures from planetary processes, while presenting the prospects for terrestrial exoplanet characterization and life detection with JWST and other future telescopes.

In this episode of "The UFO People," I want to talk about "Experiencers," people who have allegedly abducted or contacted by aliens or some other paranormal entity. While they form huge aspects of the narrative, why are we often so quick to dismiss them? Has too much fakery tarnished the reputation of such events? However, they are often our only link to this strange and weird phenomenon.
