Our Sun's Mysterious 11-Year Cycle Appears to Be Driven by Alignment of the Planets

Every 11 years, the Sun cycles through from riotous flare and sunspot activity to a quieter period, before ramping up again. It's almost as regular as clockwork, and for years astronomers have been wondering what causes it. Now, they've proposed a new solution.

Even though the Solar System's planets are much smaller than the Sun, the gravity of some of them is able to influence our star's magnetic field. This, the researchers assert, is what controls the solar cycle.

Who was the Greek Goddess of the Moon? How did our ancestors study the Moon? What were the first calendars used for? These questions will be answered in this video!

This video is the first in the series, Going to the Moon. In this video, we discuss the History of the Moon during Human times. Understanding the observations our ancestors made, and how the Moon influences animals. We start out discussing some of the ancient lunar calendars that were developed. The Ancient Egyptian lunar calendar, Egyptian Astronomy the Gods and Goddesses named after the Moon, like Artemis. Apollo and Artemis were twins, which makes since the Artemis NASA mission was announced to go back to the Moon.

We then look at Babylonian astronomy, and how they were able to determine the length of a Sidereal Month and a Synodic Month. We also discuss the difference between a Synodic Month vs sidereal month. From there, we discuss various philosophers such as Anaxagoras and Ptolemy and their discoveries about the Moon. We also look at Galileo Moon drawings, discuss Kepler's laws and Newton's laws of motion.

From there, we looked more at animal behavior, Wolves during a Full Moon, etc.

Additionally, He graduated Cum Laude (3.67) with Honors, a concentration in Astrophysics, and a minor in Mathematics. he is pursuing his PhD in Physics & Astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania with a focus on the detection and characterization of exoplanets. His career goal is to accept an astronomy-oriented position in either academia or a national research facility.

Steve Berg is an actor and improviser who was most recently seen in New Line’s comedy feature "Tag" starring Jon Hamm and Rashida Jones. His credits also include recurring roles on NBC's "The Good Place," ABC's "The Goldbergs," Comedy Central's "Idiotsitter," and BET's "The Comedy Get Down." He has appeared in two features for director Joe Swanberg -- the Netflix Original "Win It All" and the indie "Digging For Fire" which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Berg has been a drunk narrator multiple times on Comedy Central's "Drunk History" and was a series regular in the Fox Television pilot "WTF America" produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Berg can next be seen in the indie "When Jeff Tried to Save the World." He is originally from Omaha, Nebraska.

Ryan is joined by actor/writer and UFO buff, Steve Berg. Ryan originally learned of Berg's work through a hilarious segment of the Comedy Central tv show, "Drunk History", in which Berg recounted the Roswell UFO incident in concise and inebriated detail. But Berg wasn't a one-trick pony. His UFO knowledge was vast, and it truly shows in this wide-ranging interview.

Ryan and Berg discuss the late Stanton Friedman and his contributions to the UFO research field. They also discuss the prolific work of Jacques Vallée, belief systems, the cult-like tendencies of people in the UFO community, the Bennewitz affair in the 1980s, and Berg's personal thoughts on the recent mainstream coverage of UFOs and the work being done by To the Stars Academy. Berg then introduces us to his current podcast endeavor, Voyage to the Stars, a cosmic dark comedy of improvised storytelling and rich science fiction lore.

Astronomers have identified a galaxy called Markarian 1216 (Mrk 1216 for short) that has a large amount of dark matter at its core.

Markarian 1216 is an unusual type of galaxy that has managed to avoid merging with other galaxies over billions of years.

Dark matter accounts for about 85% of the matter in the universe, although it has only been detected indirectly.

X-rays from Chandra observed at different distances from Mrk 1216's center allowed astronomers to "weigh" the dark matter in the middle of the galaxy.

Scientists have used this data to trace the evolution of galaxies like Markarian 1216 back over billions of years.

Future studies of this galaxy may provide the opportunity to test ideas about the nature of dark matter.

Isolated for billions of years, a galaxy with more dark matter packed into its core than expected has been identified by astronomers using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory.

The galaxy, known as Markarian 1216, contains stars that are within 10% the age of the universe. In other words, the stars are almost as old as the universe itself. Scientists have found that Markarian 1216 has gone through a different evolution than typical galaxies. This includes dark matter that, through gravity, holds the galaxy together. Dark matter is a mysterious substance that accounts for about 85% of the matter in the universe, yet does not give off or reflect light. Therefore, scientists have only been able to detect it indirectly so far, making it a challenge to learn about.

Markarian 1216 belongs to a family of elliptically shaped galaxies that are more densely packed with stars in their centers than most other galaxies. Astronomers think they have descended from reddish, compact galaxies called "red nuggets" that formed about a billion years after the Big Bang, but then stalled in their growth about 10 billion years ago.

If this explanation is correct, then the dark matter in Markarian 1216 and its galactic cousins should be tightly packed. To test this idea for the first time, a pair of astronomers studied the X-ray brightness and temperature of hot gas from Chandra at different distances from Markarian 1216's center. This allowed them to, in a sense, weigh, how much dark matter exists in the middle of the galaxy.

The researchers found a high concentration of dark matter in the center of Markarian 1216, confirming that Markarian 1216 descended from a red nugget galaxy. This tells us about the evolution of Mrk 1216 going back in time about ten billion years. Further studies of this galaxy may provide astronomers with the opportunity to test ideas about the nature of dark matter.

Planets Directly Seen Growing Around Young Star PDS 70

Astronomers have directly imaged two exoplanets that are gravitationally carving out a wide gap within a planet-forming disk surrounding a young star.

While over a dozen exoplanets have been directly imaged, this is only the second multi-planet system to be photographed. (The first was a four-planet system orbiting the star HR 8799.) Unlike HR 8799, though, the planets in this system are still growing by accreting material from the disk.
