This all ages event starts at 7 p.m., and will include a presentation by filmmaker Steve Edmiston, as well as a screening of the 30-minute film and a Q&A afterwards.
If you haven’t seen the film yet, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn about this historic, local UFO and the first ‘Man In Black’ incident that happened just off Maury Island in June of 1947.

Based on declassified FBI documents, The Maury Island Incident tells the incredible, tragic and forgotten story of Harold Dahl, who on June 21, 1947, alleged a UFO sighting over Puget Sound, WA. This event sparked “the summer of the saucers,” the modern era of UFO obsession, the first appearance of “Men in Black” and a governmental battle over UFO sighting jurisdiction reaching directly to FBI Executive Director J. Edgar Hoover.

Join us for a film screening/Q&A about the 1947 Maury Island Incident, which prompted the original “Men in Black” appearance, popularized by Hollywood, presented by directors Steve Edmiston and Scott Schaefer.

About the Speakers:

Steve Edmiston works as an independent feature film screenwriter and producer. He is also an attorney with 25 years of experience practicing business, litigation intellectual property, and entertainment law. Edmiston is a frequent teacher, advisor, and speaker on film and film industry issues. He has shown his films at a variety of festivals including: Palm Springs, Fort Lauderdale, Seattle International Film Festival, Big Island Film Festival, Ashland and Port Townsend.

Edmiston Wrote and Directed the award-winning short The Day My Parents Became Cool, which was shot entirely in the south Puget Sound area.

You’d think that years in the cold hard vacuum of space, suffering extreme temperature changes, and receiving brutal doses of radiation would be all it takes to sterilize any life caught on the outside of a lander or rover headed to Mars or Europa.

Well, think again. Life just demonstrated that it’s surprisingly ready to make the journey, and happy to get back to work the moment conditions improve.

The Taurids meteor shower strikes Earth each year in June and again in November. However, in June Taurid meteors are hard to detect, because they approach from the dayside of the planet. Some scientists believe the meteor stream includes some dangerous pieces of rock.

Gamma rays, the highest energy light in the electromagnetic spectrum, generally arise from extreme events. For over a decade, NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has mapped these energetic cosmic emissions and helped characterize their sources. A particular conundrum is found in the center of our Milky Way galaxy, which emits significantly more gamma-ray light than can be easily explained. Join us to probe the possible origins of this mysterious gamma radiation, from dark matter to ancient remnants of old dead stars, and explore a method to potentially solve this powerful puzzle.

Our Universe Has Antimatter Partner on the Other Side of the Big Bang, Say Physicists

Our universe could be the mirror image of an antimatter universe extending backwards in time before the Big Bang. So claim physicists in Canada, who have devised a new cosmological model positing the existence of an “antiuniverse” which, paired to our own, preserves a fundamental rule of physics called CPT symmetry. The researchers still need to work out many details of their theory, but they say it naturally explains the existence of dark matter.

Standard cosmological models tell us that the universe – space, time and mass/energy – exploded into existence some 14 billion years ago and has since expanded and cooled, leading to the progressive formation of subatomic particles, atoms, stars and planets.

Astronomers have directly imaged two exoplanets that are gravitationally carving out a wide gap within a planet-forming disk surrounding a young star.

While over a dozen exoplanets have been directly imaged, this is only the second multi-planet system to be photographed. (The first was a four-planet system orbiting the star HR 8799.) Unlike HR 8799, though, the planets in this system are still growing by accreting material from the disk.

“This is the first unambiguous detection of a two-planet system carving a disk gap,” said Julien Girard of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.

The host star, known as PDS 70, is located about 370 light-years from Earth. The young 6-million-year-old star is slightly smaller and less massive than our Sun, and is still accreting gas. It is surrounded by a disk of gas and dust that has a large gap extending from about 1.9 to 3.8 billion miles.

Two familiar bright regions rotate back into Earth-view this week, but they arent quite as active as they were the last time we saw them. No longer classified as sunspots, nevertheless, these regions are still boosting the solar flux, which means radio propagation is back into the marginal range on Earth's dayside for emergency responders and amateur radio operators. We also have a stealthy solar storm that has launched towards Earth. Couple that with the small pockets of fast solar wind in this "coronal hole, bright region oreo cookie sandwich" and we could see unsettled to active conditions on and off throughout this whole week. Pecos Hank with Red sprites, secondary jets and newly discovered "green afterglow" events appearing to be triggered by red sprites. A dozen vibrant red sprites were recorded on this evening and only two events had this green afterglow.

I'm leaning towards it being an interaction with the airglow layer which is lowered due to gravity waves. I know that in heavy thunderstorms , gravity waves form in the airglow layer with deeper peaks and troughs and that the strongest nightglow emissions occur mostly in a relatively thin layer of atmosphere between 85 and 95 kilometers (53 and 60 miles) above the Earth’s surface. Little emission occurs below this layer since there’s a higher concentration of molecules, allowing for dissipation of chemical energy (via collisions rather than light production). Likewise, little emission occurs above that layer because the atmospheric density is so low that there are too few light-emitting reactions to yield an appreciable amount of light. I think that gravity waves perhaps caused deeper troughs pushing this layer of atmosphere associated with airglow down enough to interact with the sprite tops. Then it's a matter of only the most energetic sprites triggered within this trough produce the effect. It would explain why not all bright sprites have this and how not all tips have it in one bright event. Essentially like a tiger elve version of a sprite. Tiger-sprite. My pic of gravity waves in Texas airglow shows similar color.

A plasma is typically a hot soup of ions and electrons which are thermalized (equal in temperature to the environment) and STUPID hot. But it's possible for certain conditions (radio frequency heating or extremely rapid electrical discharges, like in a sprite) for only electrons in a plasma to become thermalized, while ions and neutral atoms remain relatively cold. In nerdspeak this is a nonthermal plasma or non-equilibrium plasma. Since electrons have an extremely tiny mass, a nonthermal plasma stores little heat energy and has a very high extinction rate (becomes cold and nonconductive very quickly, looking more like a "flash"). What I think has happened here is a hot region of the sprite (a largely nonthermal plasma) has persisted for a period of time long enough to heat and partially thermalize much heavier ions and neutral atoms in the mesosphere. Ion extinction rates for these heavier species (looks like oxygen ions from the color) are much lower because they store a lot of thermal energy, so the glow persists much longer. Best guess at least!
