For instance, Sagittarius A* (pronounced “Sagittarius A Star”) in the center of our own Milky Way galaxy. It’s usually very dim, but astronomers recently saw Sagittarius A* flare up — in fact, it just got brighter than we’ve ever seen it.

Can we see the end of the universe?

The greatest discoveries in science often sprung from outside of the box thinking. It could be said that both Newton and Einstein came up with their ideas initially simply by taking a fresh look at how we describe our universe. What’s currently important is that fresh ideas get looked at and debated. That’s innovation, and it’s all around us currently from SpaceX revolutionizing the aerospace industry to murmurs of private efforts to harness fusion.

But what else might we do? My guest Dr. David Kipping has come up with an idea for a new type of telescope, not using mirrors or lenses per se, but the earth itself perhaps eventually giving us an entirely new way to view our universe.

Professor David Kipping speaks with John Michael Godlier about a solution for turning the Earth into a "Terrascope", an earth sized telescope. Also discussed were the SETI implications of using the Terrascope as well as using it to send signals out or if alien civilizations and technosignature implications.

On August 23-27, 2019, let the moon guide you through the brightest stars of the night sky. The Winter Circle or Winter Hexagon, may well be the largest famous asterism in the heavens.
The seven stars that form the Winter Circle or Hexagon are among the brightest stars in the sky. Sirius is the brightest of all stars, Capella is the 6th brightest star, Rigel and Procyon are the 7th and 8th respectively, Aldebaran is the 14th, Pollux the 17th, and Castor the 24th. Betelgeuse, which isn’t part of the Hexagon but is located near its centre, is the 10th brightest star in the sky.

The Winter Circle is so big that it even makes Orion the Mighty Hunter look tiny! Three bright stars within the giant Winter Circle —Procyon, Sirius, and Betelgeuse —make up another asterism known as the Winter Triangle.

How stars work was a mystery until the early 20th century when astronomers learned to decode stars' spectra. Spectroscopy allowed stars' chemical make-up, temperature, and luminosity to be directly measured. Thanks to a spectral classification system developed by
Annie Jump Cannon, and the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, it became possible to understand how stars are classified, and how stars live and evolve from the main sequence to red giant to white dwarfs.

Potentially Habitable Super-Earth Found Orbiting A Nearby Star

An international group of astronomers discovered an Earth-like planet using NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in the constellation Hydra, about 31 light-years from Earth.

The planet named GJ 357 d, is six times larger than Earth and It orbits a dwarf star with two other previously unknown planets. Located in the outer edge of its host star's "habitable zone," scientists believe that this super-Earth could have water on its surface.

Polaris: The North Star

Polaris designated α Ursae Minoris, commonly the North Star or Pole Star, is the brightest star in the constellation of Ursa Minor. It is very close to the north celestial pole, making it the current northern pole star. The revised Hipparcos parallax gives a distance to Polaris of about 433 light-years (133 parsecs).

Polaris is a triple star system, composed of the primary star, Polaris Aa (a yellow supergiant), in orbit with a smaller companion (Polaris Ab); the pair in orbit with Polaris B (discovered in August 1779 by William Herschel).

The reason Polaris is so important is because the axis of Earth is pointed almost directly at it. During the course of the night, Polaris does not rise or set, but remains in very nearly the same spot above the northern horizon year-round while the other stars circle around it.

So at any hour of the night, at any time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, you can readily find Polaris and it is always found in a due northerly direction. If you were at the North Pole, the North Star would be directly overhead.

Could Europa Host Life?

About 630 Million Km away from Earth,
Europa is the smallest out of the four Galilean moons orbiting around Jupiter,
With it only being 3,000 Km in diameter, Making it slightly smaller than our moon.
But scientists think that even though Europa is far away from the habitable zone,
It is one of the most promising places where life could exist in the solar system.
Evidence shows that Europa has a vast ocean deep below its icy surface, which may possibly contain twice as much water than all of Earth’s oceans combined.
Also, Scientists believe that Europa may contain hydrothermal vents like here on earth, which generates heat from its core because of the tidal compression caused by Jupiter's huge gravitational field.
Now, some organisms actually thrive in these unusual environments, which would raise the probability of life on Europa.
Actually, as early as 2023, NASA plans to send the Europa Clipper to study this moon through a series of flybys while in orbit around Jupiter, Which would drastically increase our knowledge of this mysterious world.
Furthermore, possible future missions to Europa would be to drill through the thick layer of ice and to discover what lives in its vast oceans.

As we venture 1.2 billion Km away from Earth,
We find Titan, A world so strange that it might possibly host life as we don’t know it.
Up until 2005,
There wasn’t much information about titan,
Other than it’s saturn’s largest natural satellite,
With its diameter being about 5,000 Km,
And among all of the moons in our solar system,
Titan is the only known moon in the solar system to have a thick atmosphere.
But on the 14th of January 2005,
The Huygens probe had changed the way we saw Titan.
It touched down on the surface,
Revealing Titan had lakes, rivers and rain that are not composed of water,
But they were actually composed of Methane.
Now this shocked astronomers, because it was the only place besides Earth to have liquids on its surface in lakes and rivers.
It also increased the possibility that unusual life forms with different chemistry than on earth could exist in its Methane lakes.
Fortunately, NASA’s Dragonfly mission sets to put a drone to explore Titan.
Predicted to reach Titan in 2034, Dragonfly will be flying around dozens of promising locations on Titan looking for prebiotic chemical processes common on both Titan and Earth.
Discovering life in this mysterious ocean world could revolutionize what we know about life in the universe.
