Near The Center Of The Lagoon Nebula & Spiral Galaxies Spinning Super Fast
Published 4th & 5th November 2019
In today's image, we see the star forming region known as the Lagoon Nebula. This is in the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, towards the direction of the galactic center.
In today's image, we see a number of spiral galaxies. These are some of the fastest spinning spiral galaxies known to exist. They spin so fast that they should be torn apart. It is hypothesized that there is a large amount of dark matter in and around these galaxies to hold them together. Since dark matter does not emit any type of light (visible, x-rays, radio waves, etc) we can only see its effects through its gravitational interactions with ordinary matter.

Published 6th November 2019
The astronomical telescope is a relatively recent invention in the ancient science of stargazing. Over the past 400 years, generation after generation of technology has transformed telescopes from passive observing tools to complex, highly automated workhorses of science. This astounding increase in sophistication has brought forth a golden age of astronomical discovery and ever-new insights into the nature of the universe and our place within it. Join Dr. Sarah Kendrew for an illustrated guide to the technological inventions that enabled this cosmic transformation.

Soviet Moon Rockets & The Mercury 13 - Real History Behind 'For All Mankind's Alternative History
Published 6th November 2019
For All Mankind is a new TV show from Ronald D Moore set in an alternate history where the Soviet Union put a cosmonaut on the moon before the US. This has a whole lot of repercussions in the goals of the Apollo program, and instead of being the end of the space race, its just one more stop as the US aims to go higher and farther.

Mercury Transit November 11th 2019: What To Know About Rare Celestial Event
Published 6th November 2019
Mercury may be in retrograde, but an even rarer celestial occurrence will happen this month when the first planet in the Solar System passes across the Sun, an event known as Mercury Transit.
The event is slated to occur on Nov. 11 and won't be seen again from Earth until 2032. According to NASA's website, the event can be seen with proper safety equipment from 4:35 a.m. to 10:04 a.m. PST.
"Because Mercury is so small from our perspective on Earth, you'll need binoculars or a telescope with a Sun filter to see it," NASA wrote on its website, adding that the event "only happens about 13 times per century."

How Does Mercury's Orbit Prove General Relativity?
Published 6th November 2019
When Einstein proposed his new theory of gravity in 1915 - his theory of General Relativity that massive objects curve space - he came up with three ways of testing his theory. One of those ways was whether it could properly predict the orbit of Mercury, which up until then, no theory of gravity had been able to do. So why is Mercury's orbit so odd?

21st Century M101 & Messier 45: The Daughters Of Atlas & Pleione
Published 6th & 7th November 2019
In today's image, we see the Whirlpool Galaxy also known as M101. This is a large, nearby spiral galaxy. The image shows the combined data from four telescopes showing the x-ray, ultraviolet, visible and infrared images from the galaxy.
In today's image, we see the Pleiades star cluster also known as M45. The blue glow around the stars in this image is caused by dust particles which preferentially scatter blue light. This is similar to the reason our sky is blue because of scattering of light by particles in the atmosphere.

Jeff Moore | Encounter With Ultima Thule: The Most Distant Object Humanity Has Ever Explored
Published 5th November 2019
After encountering Pluto, the New Horizons spacecraft, for the first time flew by a member of the Kuiper Belt of icy objects beyond Neptune. This particular object, informally named “Ultimate Thule” (meaning the farthest place beyond the known world,) turned out to be a “contact binary” – two smaller icy worlds stuck together. Dr. Moore shares an insider’s view (with great images) of how the mission got there and what we learned at Ultima Thule.

Dive Into TESS's Southern Sky Panorama
Published 5th November 2019
The glow of the Milky Way -- our galaxy seen edgewise -- arcs across a sea of stars in a new mosaic of the southern sky produced from a year of observations by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Constructed from 208 TESS images taken during the mission's first year of science operations, completed on July 18, the southern panorama reveals both the beauty of the cosmic landscape and the reach of TESS's cameras.
Within this scene, TESS has discovered 29 exoplanets, or worlds beyond our solar system, and more than 1,000 candidate planets astronomers are now investigating.
TESS divided the southern sky into 13 sectors and imaged each one of them for nearly a month using four cameras, which carry a total of 16 charge-coupled devices (CCDs). Remarkably, the TESS cameras capture a full sector of the sky every 30 minutes as part of its search for exoplanet transits. Transits occur when a planet passes in front of its host star from our perspective, briefly and regularly dimming its light. During the satellite's first year of operations, each of its CCDs captured 15,347 30-minute science images. These images are just a part of more than 20 terabytes of southern sky data TESS has returned, comparable to streaming nearly 6,000 high-definition movies.
In addition to its planet discoveries, TESS has imaged a comet in our solar system, followed the progress of numerous stellar explosions called supernovae, and even caught the flare from a star ripped apart by a supermassive black hole. After completing its southern survey, TESS turned north to begin a year-long study of the northern sky.

NICER Catches Milestone X-Ray Burst
Published 7th November 2019
A thermonuclear blast on a pulsar called J1808 resulted in the brightest burst of X-rays seen to date by NASA's Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) telescope. The explosion, which occurred on a pulsar known as J1808 on Aug. 20, 2019, released as much energy in 20 seconds as our Sun does in almost 10 days. Watch to see how scientists think this incredible explosion occurred.

Can We Genetically Engineer Humans To Survive Missions To Mars?
Published 7th November 2019
Will we one day combine tardigrade DNA with our cells to go to Mars?
Chris Mason, a geneticist and associate professor of physiology and biophysics at Weill Cornell University in New York, has investigated the genetic effects of spaceflight and how humans might overcome these challenges to expand our species farther into the solar system. One of the (strangest) ways that we might protect future astronauts on missions to places like Mars, Mason said, might involve the DNA of tardigrades, tiny micro-animals that can survive the most extreme conditions, even the vacuum of space!
Mason led one of the 10 teams of researchers NASA chose to study twin astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly. After launching in 2015, Scott Kelly spent almost a year aboard the International Space Station while his twin brother, Mark Kelly, stayed back on Earth.

Mars Is Coming Into Conjunction With The Bright Star Spica Before Dawn
Published 7th November 2019
During the next few days as darkness gives way to dawn look towards the eastern horizon. Mars is coming into conjunction with the star Spica in Virgo.
When Mars rises shortly after 5 a.m. local time on the mornings surrounding Sunday, November 10, it will be positioned less than 3 degrees to the upper left of the bright star Spica in Virgo. The Red Planet and the 250 light-years-distant white star will appear together in the field of view of binoculars.
Spica is one of the 20 brightest stars in the night sky, coming in at number 16. It is blue white in colour. In contrast, Mars shines with a reddish hue.
