Study Suggests Earth & Moon Not Identical Oxygen Twins

Scientists at The University of New Mexico have found that the Earth and Moon have distinct oxygen compositions and are not identical in oxygen as previously thought according to a new study released today in Nature Geoscience.

The paper, titled Distinct oxygen isotope compositions of the Earth and Moon, may challenge the current understanding of the formation of the Moon.

Unusual Tear-drop Shaped, Half-pulsating Star Discovered By Amateur Astronomers

When stars behave strangely, astronomers take notice. In the case of a star known as HD74423, it was amateur astronomers who first spotted the anomaly in data captured by NASA's latest planet-hunting space satellite TESS. What they didn't realize was that they were looking at an entirely unknown type of star -- the first of its kind.

This star of interest, located about 1,500 light-years from Earth, was flagged to the astronomy community -- but astronomers didn't understand it either.

Nigerian Astrophysicist Identifies Possible Case Of Rings Around An Exoplanet

Rings have not yet been discovered around exoplanets despite their prevalence around the giant planets of the solar system. However, an international team of researchers, led by Babatunde Akinsanmi (PhD student at the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences (IA) and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto) found statistical evidence that indicates that the exoplanet HIP 41378 f is similar to Uranus with a ring system around it, inclined by about 25 degrees, and extending from 1.05 to 2.59 times the diameter of the planet.

The work now revealed had the main objective of explaining the unexpectedly low density of the exoplanet HIP 41378 f making it seem as though it is made from cotton candy.

A fascinating discussion with guest, Kevin H. Knuth, Ph.D. about his recent peer-reviewed scientific paper called: Estimating Flight Characteristics of Anomalous Unidentified Aerial Vehicles, his own personal sighting and his quest for a scientific answer to the UFO problem.

Prof. Knuth is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the University at Albany (SUNY), and is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Entropy (MDPI). He is a former NASA research scientist having worked for four years at NASA Ames Research Center in the Intelligent Systems Division designing artificial intelligence algorithms for astrophysical data analysis. He has over 20 years of experience in applying Bayesian and maximum entropy methods to the design of machine learning algorithms for data analysis applied to the physical sciences. His current research interests include the foundations of physics, quantum information, inference and inquiry, autonomous robotics, and the search for and characterization of extrasolar planets. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed publications and has been invited to give over 80 presentations in 14 countries.

The ultra-hot giant exoplanet WASP-76b orbits the star WASP-76, located some 390 light-years away in the constellation of Pisces. This video shows the orbit of this strange planet around its host star.

Like the Moon on its orbit around the Earth, WASP-76b is ‘tidally locked’: it takes as long to rotate around its axis as it does to go around the star. On its day side temperatures climb above 2400 degrees Celsius, high enough to vaporise metals. Strong winds carry iron vapour to the cooler night side where it condenses into iron droplets.
