This Dead Star Is Twisting Spacetime

A pulsar has just confirmed another piece of the general relativity puzzle Einstein predicted, and it’s the first real detection of an effect known as ‘frame dragging.’ And it’s kind of a big deal.

Frame dragging, or lense-thirring, basically states that spacetime will churn like honey around a rotating body with gravitational mass. We've seen traces of the effect before around the Earth, but we're fairly gravitationally tiny, so the effect was hardly definitive.

Enter the pulsar in question. In January 2020, scientists published their observations of just such a special case. The scientists watched a binary star system with some unusual qualities. One star is a white dwarf about the size of the Earth but much chunkier, about 300,000 times the density. And this white dwarf is spinning so fast it completes a rotation in a matter of minutes. That mass and speed means it drags space-time around it much more strongly than Earth does.

This system moves so comparatively quickly that we can literally observe its evolution, in this case using the Parkes and UTMOST radio telescopes in Australia. Their orbit has drifted slightly over time, and the only possible explanation is frame dragging.

Frame dragging is a predicted phenomenon in general relativity, whereby a rotating mass drags the surrounding spacetime around with it. Venkatraman Krishnan et al. analyzed timing observations of PSR J1141-6545, a young pulsar in a binary orbit with a white dwarf. Modeling the arrival times of the radio pulses showed a long-term drift in the orbital parameters. After considering possible contributions to this drift, they concluded that it is dominated by frame dragging (the Lense-Thirring effect) of the rapidly spinning white dwarf. These observations verify a prediction of general relativity and provide constraints on the evolutionary history of the binary system.

Any object with mass warps the space-time around it, in much the same way as a heavy object deforms a stretched elastic sheet, explained study leader Ignazio Ciufolini of the Universitá di Lecce in Italy. If the object spins, another distortion is introduced, "in the same way as the elastic sheet would be twisted by a spinning heavy wheel on it." If the space around Earth is being frame-dragged, then satellites ought to be caught up in the deformation, scientists reasoned.

The easiest way to understand frame dragging is to imagine sticking something in a pool of water and starting to rotate it. As the speed of the rotation increases, the water will begin to swirl around the object. Something similar happens when a massive object is rotating, except the fluid it's rotating in is space-time itself.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order today (April 6) establishing U.S. policy on the exploitation of off-Earth resources. That policy stresses that the current regulatory regime — notably, the 1967 Outer Space Treaty — allows the use of such resources.

Typically the Lyrids produce about 10-20 meteors per hour but can put on outbursts. This shower may provide a ray of hope to those stuck in their homes during the pandemic. New Bright Signs Of Cycle 25 | Solar Storm Forecast

This week the Sun continues to show more signs of Solar Cycle 25. We have two new bright regions at high latitudes (a hallmark of the new cycle). One region in Earth-view has been firing B-class flares, which is a good indicator that activity is continuing to rise. The other region on the Sun's farside should rotate into Earth-view in a few days, and should help keep the solar flux boosted into the low 70s. Along with the new bright regions, we also have a coronal hole that will rotate into the Earth-strike zone in just less than a week and it will send us some fast solar wind that could bring more aurora to high latitudes, possibly mid-latitudes too for a short while. The Event Horizon Telescope Peers Into The Dark Heart Of A Quasar

The above animation shows the three highest resolution images ever taken of a quasar called 3C 279. The first image comes from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), the second from the Global 3mm VLBI Array (GMVA), and the third from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT).

“This is not just an evolution, but a revolution,” says Avery Broderick, leader of the EHT Initiative at Perimeter Institute, where he holds the Delaney Family John Archibald Wheeler Chair, and an associate faculty member at the University of Waterloo.

Broderick and his colleagues developed the tools to extract the data from the EHT observations and characterize the violent inner life of the quasar. Using these new computational tools, they produced geometric models that correspond to the quasar’s motion over a week-long EHT observation period.

The Hunt To Find Life On Jupiter's Icy Moons

From its familiar stripes to its giant red spot, Jupiter has mesmerized scientists for centuries. It’s the largest planet in our solar system, and its icy moons could harbor key ingredients for life. And now ESA is on a mission to make history and gain a better understanding of what may lie beneath the icy crusts of the planet’s moons.

The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, or JUICE, is ESA’s mission to study if the icy moons around Jupiter are as habitable as scientists think. The single orbital spacecraft will orbit Europa and Callisto, but will make history as it orbits Ganymede for the first time ever.

It’s not every day that we send a spacecraft to Jupiter, so JUICE will be equipped with ten instruments, all working together to try and capture as much data as possible
hopefully leaving us with a better understanding of our solar system’s largest planet and its mysterious moons.
