UY Scuti - The Largest Star Ever Discovered
Published 11th May 2020
When considering star size, we are incredibly restricted with what we can't measure - the vast majority of the universe's stars lie outside of our galaxy, and are too far away to ever be measured. In spite of this, we have discovered some truly magnificent stars in our own backyard. Today, we will be looking at the biggest - UY Scuti. This magnificent titan of the cosmos is a staggering 2.3BN KM in diameter, and that is the least incredible of some of the numbers associated with it. Today, we will be analysing this star, and some of its close competition in the race for the largest star ever discovered.

Scientists Discover A Super-Rare 'Super-Earth'
Published 12th May 2020
Although the cosmos extends across billions of galaxies, each containing millions of stars and even more possible worlds orbiting those stars, a planet like our own is still proving to be quite rare.
In the hunt for planets orbiting stars that aren't our own Sun, scientists have only been able to find a handful of exoplanets that resemble Earth. And each discovery inches us a little closer to finding habitability outside our Solar System.
A team of astronomers recently discovered a new 'super-Earth,' or an exoplanet that bears some similarity to our own planet.
The finding was published this week in The Astronomical Journal.
The newly discovered exoplanet is located near the center of the galaxy, and is about four times the mass of the Earth. It orbits a dim dwarf star that's about 10% the mass of the Sun at a distance that falls somewhere between the orbital distance of Earth and Venus.

The Cosmonaut Who Almost Walked On The Moon
Published 12th May 2020
On March 18th, 1965, cosmonaut Alexei Leonov stepped outside of his Voskhod 3KD spacecraft for a total of 12 minutes and nine seconds to become the first man to ever walk in space. It was a harrowing mission - Leonov’s spacesuit pressurization failed during the walk, and he was nearly unable to return to the spacecraft. Leonov had a cyanide capsule with him should that actually have been the case. It was perhaps due to this experience and Leonov’s proven ability under pressure, then, that he was chosen for another historic first. The Soviet’s top-secret mission to the moon called for a similar spacewalk transfer to a Soviet landing vehicle. The Soviets intended for Leonov to be the first man to walk on the moon.

Scientists Model Mars Climate To Understand Habitability
Published 11th May 2020
A Southwest Research Institute scientist modeled the atmosphere of Mars to help determine that salty pockets of water present on the Red Planet are likely not habitable by life as we know it on Earth. A team that also included scientists from Universities Space Research Association (USRA) and the University of Arkansas helped allay planetary protection concerns about contaminating potential Martian ecosystems. These results were published this month in Nature Astronomy.
Due to Mars' low temperatures and extremely dry conditions, a droplet of liquid water on its surface would instantly freeze, boil or evaporate, unless the droplet had dissolved salts in it. This brine would have a lower freezing temperature and would evaporate more slowly than pure liquid water. Salts are found across Mars, so brines could form there.

Located just northeast of the colossal Tharsis volcanic-tectonic province on Mars, the landscape shown in this image from ESA’s Mars Express is a mix of faults, elevated ground, deep valleys, and largely parallel ridges, extending both down into the surface and up above the martian crust. This is a portion of Tempe Fossae – a series of tectonic faults that cuts across Tempe Terra in Mars’ northern highlands.

Comet Halley & Comet SWAN
Published 14th May 2020
In today's image, we see Comet SWAN which had its closest approach to the Earth a couple of days ago (still tens of millions of miles away!) The comet is unfortunately not brightening as much as had been previously predicted and is already stating to fade. In addition, we see a meteor streak which is a bit of debris left behind by Comet Halley which orbits the Sun every 76 years and last visited the solar system back in the mid-1980s.

High-Altitude Hazes On Jupiter
Published 14th May 2020
NASA's Juno mission captured this look at Jupiter's tumultuous northern regions during the spacecraft's close approach to the planet on Feb. 17, 2020.
Notable features in this view are the long, thin bands that run through the center of the image from top to bottom. Juno has observed these long streaks since its first close pass by Jupiter in 2016. The streaks are layers of haze particles that float above the underlying cloud features. Scientists don't yet know exactly what these hazes are made of or how they form. Two jet streams in Jupiter's atmosphere flank either side of the region where the narrow bands of haze typically appear, and some researchers speculate those jet streams may influence the formation of the high hazes.

SOFIA Finds Clues Hidden In Pluto's Haze
Published 14th May 2020
When the New Horizons spacecraft passed by Pluto in 2015, one of the many fascinating features its images revealed was that this small, frigid world in the distant solar system has a hazy atmosphere. Now, new data helps explain how Pluto's haze is formed from the faint light of the Sun 3.7 billion miles away as it moves through an unusual orbit.
Remote observations of Pluto by NASA's telescope on an airplane, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, or SOFIA, show that the thin haze enshrouding Pluto is made of very small particles that remain in the atmosphere for prolonged periods of time rather than immediately falling to the surface. SOFIA's data clarify that these haze particles are actively being replenished—a discovery that is revising predictions on the fate of Pluto's atmosphere as it moves into even colder areas of space on its 248-Earth-year orbit around the Sun. The results are published in the scientific journal Icarus.

Space News | Standard Theory Of Moon's Origins Shattered
Published 17th May 2020
New scientific reports throw into disarray the standard theory of the origins of our planet’s moon. A decade ago, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency’s spacecraft Kaguya spent a year and a half orbiting the moon and collecting data. The spacecraft was equipped with an ion mass spectrometer, and it detected something unexpected – an abundance of carbon ions, which were distributed “over almost the total lunar surface….”
The problem this discovery presents for the consensus model of the moon's origins is explained in a Science Alert report: “The reason that's a problem for the lunar impact formation model - in which a large body we call Theia collided with Earth sometime in the early years of the Solar System, breaking off a chunk and sending it into Earth orbit - is because volatiles have a low boiling point.
"But the Theia collision would have generated pretty intense temperatures - 4,000-6,000 Kelvin - which should have partially vaporised the debris, and boiled away the volatiles, producing what is known as a volatile-depleted 'dry' Moon.”
In this episode, we explore the theoretical pathways that the Electric Universe offers into lunar geology.
