Radio Science

Radio waves are used to communicated with spacecraft. We use them to send commands to the spacecraft and download data from them. But in many cases we can use the radio wave itself as a measuring instrument or sensor. In this episode of Celestial Sphere we look at few examples where radio waves are used as part of the sensors suite on a spacecraft. This is a two part series. Part 2 will focus on the use of radio waves to make scientific observations and take measurements.
Radio science modules have become standard scientific instruments on many deep space missions. they provide a cost effective way to gather information such as mass, atmospheric temperature and pressure of a celestial object. This is the second haft and more detailed look of how radio science works.
