Instead taking an appropriate distance from the ways of the world and act on those little or big things life shows us, where we can make a difference.

I'd say that taking back your life is not succumbing to anger, depression or elation over any political outcome.
Instead taking an appropriate distance from the ways of the world and act on those little or big things life shows us, where we can make a difference.

I really like the way you've expressed this idea and I believe it's true.

There's a bible quote about trusting no man, which I don't interpret as saying everyone is evil or deceptive, but that if you invest too much belief in any one person then you're risking a let-down at some point. We're all human after all.

A police line was formed on 3rd and Pennsylvania to hold back the angry Biden supporters.

The Dutch government will decide on Friday whether to step down over an escalating scandal in which tax officials wrongly accused thousands of parents of fraud, plunging many families into debt by ordering them to repay childcare allowances.

The opposition Labour party leader, Lodewijk Asscher, who was social affairs minister in the previous government, resigned over the affair on Thursday, denying he knew the tax authority was “wrongly hunting down thousands of families” but conceding a failing system had “made the government an enemy of its people”.

The prime minister, Mark Rutte, has said he opposes dissolving the current coalition, arguing the Netherlands needs stability amid the coronavirus pandemic, but has not ruled it out. The cabinet will review its position at a regular meeting on Friday.

The four ruling parties in Rutte’s coalition are deeply divided in their response to a damning report on the scandal but are thought to prefer ending their alliance rather than risk losing a no-confidence vote next Tuesday, after a planned parliamentary debate on the report.

The MPs’ report, titled Unprecedented Injustice, was published last month after an inquiry into the childcare benefits scandal that included public questioning of officials up to and including Rutte.

It established that “fundamental principles of the rule of law were violated” by the Dutch tax authority, with fraud investigations into families triggered by “something as simple as an administrative error, without any malicious intent”.

The investigating committee chairman, Chris van Dam, called the system “a mass process in which there was no room for nuance”, with more than 20,000 working families pursued for fraud before the courts, ordered to repay child support benefits and denied the right to appeal over several years from 2012.

Some were pushed close to bankruptcy or forced to move house by unjust claims for tens of thousands of euros when the alleged fraud amounted to an incorrectly filled-out form or a missing signature. Several couples separated under the strain.

Government ministers, MPs, civil servants and court judges all bore their share of responsibility, the report concluded, recommending that “everyone in the apparatus of state should ask how such a thing can be prevented from happening again”.

The government has apologised for the tax office’s methods and in March last year set aside more than €500m (£450m) in compensation, about €30,000 for each family.

Following accusations of racial profiling, the tax authority has also admitted that 11,000 dual-nationality families were singled out for special scrutiny. However, Dutch prosecutors have declined to open an investigation into possible discrimination, saying they had found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

“Responsibility for culpable acts attributable to the state must be sought in the political domain and not in criminal law,” public prosecutors said last week.

Twenty of the families involved this week took legal action against ministers from three of the parties in Rutte’s current coalition for their role in the scandal, alleging criminal negligence through a failure of good good governance, discrimination and violating children’s rights.

The health minister, Tamara van Ark, finance minister, Wopke Hoekstra, economic affairs minister, Eric Wiebes, former tax minister Menno Snel – as well as Asscher – are all named in the case documents, filed with Dutch supreme court.

The fate of the government hangs mostly in the hands of Rutte’s coalition partners, with at least one leader – Sigrid Kaag of the social-liberal D66 party – saying this week that political consequences from the parliamentary report were inevitable.

If it does collapse, the government would stay on in a caretaker capacity until a new coalition was formed, with general elections due in March and Rutte and his centre-right People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy performing strongly in polls.

HELSINKI (AP) — Estonia’s president on Thursday tasked the leader of the main opposition party to form a new government, a day after Prime Minister Juri Ratas and his Cabinet stepped down in the wake of a corruption scandal in Ratas' ruling Center Party.

Kaja Kallas, chairwoman of the center-right Reform Party that emerged as the winner of the 2019 general election, will have 14 days to put together a new Cabinet, President Kersti Kaljulaid said.

The Baltic country's head of state urged Kallas to move rapidly as the new government needs to immediately start tackling a worsening COVID-19 situation and the economic turmoil caused by the pandemic.

“Both the Estonian people and I are expecting that Estonia will quickly have an active and competent government, which focuses on handling the pandemic and the economic crisis and on making our lives better,” Kaljulaid said in a statement after meeting with Kallas.

Ratas and his Cabinet resigned Wednesday over a scandal involving a key official at his Center Party suspected of accepting a private donation for the party in exchange for a political favor on a real estate development at the harbor district of the capital, Tallinn.

After the announcement by Ratas, who had led a three-party coalition with his left-leaning Center Party, the nationalist EKRE party and the conservative Fatherland party since April 2019, parties immediately started informal talks on cobbling together a new government.

On Thursday, the Reform Party said it would start official government formation talks with the Center Party. Together, the two parties would muster a comfortable majority at the 101-seat Riigikogu Parliament.

According to Estonian public broadcaster ERR, a new Cabinet could be sworn in on Jan. 25 under Kallas.

The government formation marks the second such attempt for Kallas, 43, in less than two years as she failed to bring about a Reform Party-led coalition after the March 2019 general election.

If successful, she would become the first female prime minister in the history of Estonia, which regained its independence in 1991 amid the collapse of the Soviet Union. A lawyer and former European Parliament lawmaker, she is the daughter of Siim Kallas, one of the Reform Party’s creators and a former prime minister.

Kallas has ruled out including the populist EKRE, the nation's third-largest party which runs on a nationalist, anti-immigration and anti-European Union agenda, in the new Cabinet, citing considerable differences in values. The pro-business and pro-entrepreneurship Reform Party defines itself on its website as “the leader of the liberal worldview in Estonia.”

Due to EKRE's strong rhetoric, Ratas' government was shaky from the start.

The EKRE leaders, Mart Helme and his son Martin Helme, caused Ratas' government several embarrassments with public statements that were seen as insulting to Estonia's international allies and which brought the government to the brink of collapse at least twice.

It's a jewel of symbolic politics.
Everyone is happy, The current cabinet stays on in a diminished capacity, but they keep going where corona legislation is concerned.
Elections were due in march anyway, so nobody is worried.


Before x-mas the government had promised monetary compensation, but so fat has not put up a dime...
So far only one minister (economics) will step down and give his current affairs to someone else..

That is hilarious. I live in The Hague, and worked for a restaurant in a street where he drives by DAILY. After every workday he will pass that restaurant. And he always greets everyone too.

So yes, I'm sure alot of it is scripted, but not ALL of it. He really DOES go to work and home on a bike, WITHOUT a security detail. It's great that you have this idea that he doesn't, but it's different when you actually see it with your own eyes.

He is definitely being followed by security detail, not in uniform of course. Because people living in The Hague, like you, have to buy into it as well, otherwise it wouldn't work. The word would get out. It's an act. I know a couple of people from The Hague as well, they see politicians all the time as well. Some people from parliament take a bike or a train, unaccompanied. But the PM definitely has his security. But he needs to stay 'one of us', especially in these times.

Haha well actually, I am not following Dutch politics at all, anymore (and I used to do that very much until covid). I am simply not interested, because everything in the world now depends on what is happening, and will happen in the USA. For me, my country is so far from real 'freedom', and so corrupted, that I have no illusion change will come from here.
