Romania’s Bermuda Triangle: The Creepy Hoia Forest of Transylvania

Outside of  Romania, especially in the English-speaking world, Transylvania is a land associated with vampires. Inside Romania, where  Vlad Dracul , or  Vlad the Impaler , is a national hero, the story of the  vampire is not as popular, though Transylvania is arguably still known for being home to one of the creepiest forests in the world. This forest also happens to be near the oldest Neolithic archaeological site in the country. The Hoia Baciu forest, whether it is deserved or not, has earned the reputation of being the Bermuda Triangle of  Romania, and probably all of eastern Europe.

The forest is said to have been named Hoia Baciu after a shepherd by the same name went missing in the forest with 200 of his sheep. In the late 1960s, a biologist by the name of Alexandru Sift is said to have taken pictures of a disc or flying saucer hovering over the forest. In 1968, a military technician by the name of Emil Barnea is said to have taken a picture of a UFO. It is claimed that he had no reason to make the story up since he had nothing to gain. The communist government at the time considered belief in the paranormal to be a sign of insanity and a threat to the state.

Outside of paranormal activity, Hoia Baciu is known for being part of a wilderness area just outside the bustling Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca. It is also a recreational area with numerous hiking trails and biking paths. Other nearby attractions are an open-air museum and the oldest Neolithic archaeological site in  Romania, Gura Baciului.

Gura Baciului dates to perhaps 6,500 BC. It is associated with the Starcevo-Koros-Cris archaeological complex which is believed by most researchers to represent some of the earliest farmers in Europe.

Catch March Full Supermoon This Sunday





March's full moon — by some accounts a supermoon — will dazzle skywatchers this Sunday (March 28), as spring's warm weather invites more people to venture outside to gaze upward.

The full moon lasts just an instant, but dedicated moon watchers can catch it at 2:48 p.m. EDT (18:48 UTC) on Sunday, when the moon appears opposite the sun in Earth-based longitude, according to a NASA statement. People who miss this fleeting moment will still be able to see a big, round moon — the rocky satellite will appear full for three days, from Saturday morning (March 27) through early Tuesday morning (March 30).

Edward Snowden’s Comments On E.T. Reveal How Deep Government Secrecy May Go





What Happened: In his book Permanent Record, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden states, “For the record, as far as I could tell, aliens have never contacted Earth or at least they haven’t contacted US intelligence.” He also addressed the topic on Joe Rogan’s podcast, stating that that he had “ridiculous access to the networks of the NSA, the CIA, the military, all these groups. I couldn’t find anything. So if it’s hidden, and it could be hidden, it’s hidden really damn well, even from people who are on the inside.” 

Why This Is Important: According to the estimates of some, the US government alone classifies up to 500 million pages of documents every single year, for the purpose of protecting ‘national security.’ Our world is drenched in secrecy, and it’s reached a point where we don’t really know what’s happening on our planet. The United States has a history of government agencies existing in secret for years. The National Security Agency (NSA) was founded in 1952, its existence was hidden until the mid 1960’s. Even more secretive is the National Reconnaissance Office, which was founded in 1960 but remained completely secret for 30 years. “National security” has now become an umbrella term to classify any information that threatens certain corporate or political agendas.

The Airplane Changed Our Idea of the World




Six years after Wilbur Wright wowed the crowds at LeMans, Henri Salmet pilots his Blériot XI-2, The Daily Mail, along the scenic beaches of Nice in 1914.

The advent of human flight not only boosted our power of movement, but also enhanced our vision: We gained the ability to see the Earth from above. Before the Wrights’ epochal breakthrough, there had been perhaps thousands of human flights, mostly in balloons. But it was the advent of the airplane—a whole new way of seeing and experiencing our planet with speed and control—that led to euphoric reactions across the world. Wilbur and Orville caused the eruption with their first public flights in the summer and early fall of 1908.

In order to appreciate just how big the news was, it’s important to remember the widespread skepticism of the Wrights’ claims to have perfected a fully practical flying machine. They did not hide their machine during its development through 1905, but didn’t exactly invite crowds either. On February 10, 1906, the New York Herald put it bluntly: “The Wrights have flown or they have not flown. They possess a machine or they do not possess one. They are in fact either fliers or liars.”

But when they flew for the public—Wilbur first, on August 8, 1908, in Le Mans, France—the press reports were breathless: “I’ve seen him! I’ve seen them!” a reporter for Le Figaro cried. “There is no doubt! Wilbur and Orville Wright have well and truly flown!” Wilbur’s flights came on the heels of earlier French and American successes by other competitors: Henry Farman winning the Deutsch-Archdeacon prize for a one-kilometer circular flight; Glenn Curtiss winning the Scientific American Cup for a one-kilometer straight-line flight in his June Bug. But Wilbur’s flights in France, and then Orville’s at Fort Myer, Virginia, were longer and in greater control by far than anything that had come before. “WORLD’S AIR SHIP RECORD SMASHED BY ORVILLE WRIGHT AT FT. MYER, VA.,” blared the Washington Times on September 13 after he flew for more than an hour.

Possible Glancing Blow CME - Monster Solar Prominence - Geomagnetic Storm March 28-29

Geomagnetic Storm Watch: A series of small coronal holes are now facing Earth. A solar wind stream flowing from these zones is predicted to reach Earth, beginning late on March 27th and into the 28th. On June 17, 1952, rocket scientist Jack Parsons, a founder of Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and inventor of the solid fuel that would put man on the moon, died in an explosion of still mysterious origins at his home laboratory in a Pasadena garage.

His widow, Marjorie Cameron Parsons (1922-1995), known personally and professionally as Cameron, fled to Mexico after the fatal blast, but returned to California. A talented painter, she became part of the Los Angeles avant-garde art scene, and made a daring appearance in Kenneth Anger's underground film "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome." Her work has been celebrated in major exhibitions in NY, LA, and abroad.

A Tour of Data Sonification: Stellar, Galactic, and Black Hole

As part of our ongoing data sonification series, three new images have now been released. In this project, astronomical data collected by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes are translated into sounds. Data sonification converts the data from these space-based telescopes into a form that users can hear instead of only see, embodying the data in a new form without changing the original content.

Sunday, March 28 - Full Worm Moon (at 18:48 GMT)



The March full moon, known as the Worm Moon, Crow Moon, Sap Moon or Lenten Moon, always shines in or near the stars of Leo. Full moons always rise in the east as the sun sets, and set in the west at sunrise. When fully illuminated, the moon's geology is enhanced, especially the contrast between the ancient cratered highlands and the younger smoother maria. This full moon is occurring 1.5 days before perigee, the point in the moon's orbit when it is closest to Earth, making this the first of four consecutive supermoons in 2021.

Tuesday, March 30 - Zodiacal Light Again (after dusk)



At the end of March we receive another opportunity to view the Zodiacal Light - if you live in a location where the sky is free of light pollution. After the evening twilight has disappeared, you'll have about half an hour to check the western sky for a broad wedge of faint light extending upwards from the horizon and centered on the ecliptic (i.e., below Mars). The viewing period will end with the new moon on April 11.
