Lightbulb Suggestion - Advertising on Avalon.

I understand that it would not be my business to ask why there isn't some form of web advertising on the avalon forums, so instead I would like to offer it as a suggestion.

Whilst some users may complain about having a pop up or two (I for one don't understand how an extra mouse click is an inconvenience tbh), avalon definitely has the traffic now to self sustain with a simple google ads set up or similar.

This would also help counter measure the problems the server has been having since the army of charles has arrived. It could even eventually pay for a full time moderator or two to make sure all of the threads are in the right place and information to be archived and presented in ways that are reasonably easy to digest by the reader.

The forum I used to moderate was not nearly as busy as avalon is at the moment, yet it managed to pay for itself with on page advertising and no pop ups.

I feel that it is a necessity to move forward and don't see long life in forums and websites that don't have advertising.

Once again, knowing that the advertising funds this steady flow of information, I cannot see how anyone could be upset by the prospect of an advert on a page.

Because look at what we get for free.

    Hello kerbie,

I do not want to answer for Bill, but I doubt he would want advertising in any way shape or form on this site or on the forum. I've heard and read Bill say, that would never happen under any circumstances. But as I say, I'm not answering for Bill, just relaying his statements in the past.

If Bill wanted ads or not, that is his call. While we all may call this 'our' forum, it's Bill's Baby.

    Kind regards to all,
    Lily

To be honest, I think mixing commercialism with the site would detract from the purpose of it being here.
If push comes to shove, we can kick in $5 per month each or something if Bill needs it.
That would be a better way, in my opinion.

    ----------

It'll never happen, and the issue is not up for debate.

But I do appreciate that the suggestion was totally well-intended, and I thank you for that.

    Hello all again,

I may get into trouble for this (may whips and beatings be upon me), but I suggest we all now go to Bill's pay button and make a donation of at least $5. That's a cost of a good cup of coffee! We all pay for our internet connection, surely we can all afford $5. And look at what information we are all getting from this fine site.?

The bloke's gotta eat! I'm going to the pay button now. What about you?

    Cheers and Love to all,
    Lily

Problem was, I do not know avalons history. I've been a reader since camelot first formed, but I never followed the politics, it never interested me. I used to forum search function and typed in advertising but was inundated with threads that weren't related to my suggestions.

I was not suggesting it to other members of the forum, just the mods and Bill.

Lily, I understand it's Bills baby and I never intended to force my opinion on him nor anyone. Just offering a suggestion with the knowing that suggestions can be dismissed.

Bill - Won't happen again. I'm glad that you see where I'm coming from. All the best.

Hi kerbie, all is cool. You were not to know what Bill's thoughts on it were. You were only making the suggestion with the best intentions. Kudos to you for thinking of Bill.

And to Bill, you need to hoik your pay button up to the top of the home page, Darling! Crikey, I had to scroll for age to the bowels of the earth to find the bloody thing, lol...

    Cheers,
    Lily
