Brown Dwarfs Spin So Fast They Almost Tear Themselves Apart

We tend to image planets as spheres. Held together by gravity, the material of a planet compresses and shifts until gravity and pressure reach a balance point known as hydrostatic equilibrium. Hydrostatic equilibrium is one of the defining characteristics of a planet. If a planet were stationary and of uniform density, then at equilibrium, it would be a perfect sphere. But planets rotate, and the faster they rotate ...




The most extreme case in our solar system is likely the dwarf planet Haumea, which rotates every 4 hours

Astronomers have found more than 2,800 brown dwarfs. For most of them, we only know their basic properties, but for 78 of them, we know their rotation periods. We can measure this by observing the dwarf’s variation in brightness over time. Since their cloud layer has weather features like Jupiter, the periodicity of their brightness tells us their rate of rotation. When the team analyzed the rotational periods of these worlds, they found that the shortest rotational periods were just over an hour. Three of the brown dwarfs studied had periods of about an hour, which would indicate an upper limit.

Federal Agencies Expanding Disclosure Requirements for Scientists





Federal agencies are preparing to implement new disclosure requirements for scientists outlined in National Security Presidential Memorandum-33 (NSPM-33), a document issued by the White House on 14 January. Although scientists already routinely report certain biographical and financial information during the grant application process, NSPM-33 establishes minimum standards across agencies for what information must be collected.

Enhancing disclosure has become a priority for policymakers seeking to identify scientists who maintain problematic ties to foreign institutions, such as employment arrangements that could lead to “hidden diversions” of intellectual property, found and prosecuted for the first time under the Trump administration.

Universities are concerned about the scope of information sought from scientists receiving federal funding, and have formally petitioned the Biden administration asking for changes, to no avail.

Humans have taken their litterbug ways to space. None of it has been removed – no one knows how.

There are currently over 129 million objects larger than a millimetre in orbit around Earth. These range from inactive satellites to an astronaut's glove. But no matter how small the item, anything travelling up to 56,000 km/h in an orbit is dangerous if it comes into contact with the many satellites that connect us around the world, be it for GPS, mobile phone data or internet connectivity.

An international meeting of scientists, the 8th European Conference on Space Debris, will address the issue later this month.

Lavrov Calls For Talks on Binding Treaty to Prohibit Weapons in Space

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has called for talks to create a legally binding international instrument that would ban the deployment of any type of weapons in space.

"We consistently believe that only a guaranteed prevention of an arms race in space will make it possible to use it for creative purposes, for the benefit of the entire mankind. We call for negotiations on the development of an international legally binding instrument that would prohibit the deployment of any types of weapons there, as well as the use of force or the threat of force," Lavrov said in a video message.
