One little (jarring) thought impinged on this story.

Many of the organs have been probably damaged in the process of medication (or lack of it) and process of dying. The expensive ones anyway. Also most of these people are elderly and their organs are not in peak condition to begin with.

Perhaps it doesn't matter if the only goal is profit, the organ recipient is kept alive for a few more years and the insurance companies and the hospitals make the money, as do the Pharma outlets providing whatever drugs were used in care and after transplant.

Yeah, I suppose it works anyway you look at it.

How long do organs remain viable after death and how are they matched to a recipient?

The Heart: 4-6 hours

In addition to medical urgency, blood type and other biological factors, those waiting for a heart transplant are also matched based on location because of the critical timing for this organ. The heart is only viable for 4-6 hours. Body size is also significant in heart matching, as the donor’s heart must fit comfortably inside the recipient’s ribcage.

The Lungs: 4-6 hours

Similar to heart matching, location and body size are also important considerations in lung allocation, since the lungs are viable for 4-6 hours after donation. That information is combined with the criteria listed above to determine a donor recipient.

The Liver: 8-12 hours

Candidates who need a liver transplant are assigned a MELD or PELD score (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease or Pediatric End-Stage Liver Disease) that indicates how urgently they need the organ. A donor liver is offered first to the candidate who matches on the common matching criteria and has the highest MELD or PELD score. Location is also taken into consideration, but since the liver can function for a longer time (8-12 hours) outside of the body, it is able to travel farther than the heart and lungs.

The Kidneys: 24-36 hours

Kidney allocation is heavily influenced by waiting time, or how long the recipient has been listed for transplant. Fortunately there is a bridge treatment for many in end-stage renal disease, called dialysis, which allows candidates to survive while awaiting a transplant. In addition, blood type and other biological factors, as well as body size of the donor and recipient are always key factors. Medical urgency and location are also factors but less so than other organs as they kidney can remain viable outside the body for 24-36 hours under the proper conditions.

Right now I'm much more worried there's going to be ww3. Then again, I was only worried when this virus first came out and I likely had it. But that's what it is, always, to all of us useless eaters. Being worried, being afraid, only guessing what they're gonna do next. And yeah, the covid situation is getting a bit worse here it seems. I don't even want to know anymore. I'm done. By the way, it was nice to not read any news at all for 2 weeks. I suggest you all do the same if it gets too much because it always does.

Yes, just best to pick and choose pieces to read based on how you are feeling.

Another thing to do is relieve some stress with exercise. Whatever you are capable of doing within your circumstances will be beneficial.

I have one of those norditrack exercise things - I moved it near the TV so when the football/soccer games are on I use the norditrack and pretend I am playing on the pitch.

I know, goofy - but whatever works right?
