SpaceX Capsule Carrying Businessmen That Paid $55M Each Docks at Space Station





The historic Axiom 1 mission crew docked to the International Space Station's (ISS) Harmony module space-facing port on Saturday morning following delays.

Soft capture was confirmed at 8:29 a.m. ET and docking was reported as "complete" at 8:41 a.m. ET. The success came after a minutes-long hold for the spaceflight due to a station video routing issue. The Crew Dragon Endeavour was initially expected to dock at 7:45 a.m. ET, but was held 20 meters away from the station as the station crew worked to troubleshoot the problem.

The crew of the 10-day flight includes former NASA astronaut Michael López-Alegría and paying passengers Larry Connor, Mark Pathy and Eytan Stibbe. The three paid $55 million apiece to be there. They join Expedition 67 crew members, including NASA astronauts Thomas Marshburn, Raja Chari and Kayla Barron, European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Matthias Maurer and Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Artemyev, Sergey Korsokov and Denis Matveev.

Lyrid Meteor Shower 2022: Coming to a Sky Near You





The Lyrid meteor shower peaks in late April and space cadets in the Northern Hemisphere will get a good view of the dusty trail of a comet with a centuries-long orbit around the sun. The Lyrid meteors streak across the sky between April 14 and April 30, so skywatchers have a chance to see them during that window, weather permitting.

The Lyrids have been chronicled in many cultures over the past 2,700 years. Chinese astronomers noted prominent displays in 687 B.C. and 15 B.C. Also, in 1136, a report from Korea chronicled the shower with the words "many stars flew from the northeast," according to Space.com's Joe Rao.

In 1803, residents of Richmond, Virginia, went outside late at night after a fire alarm. A report from that time noted that the meteors resembled rockets in the sky.

"Shooting stars. This electrical phenomenon was observed on Wednesday morning last at Richmond and its vicinity, in a manner that alarmed many, and astonished every person that beheld it. From 1 until 3 in the morning, those starry meteors seemed to fall from every point in the heavens, in such numbers as to resemble a shower of sky rockets," wrote a journalist at the time.

Similar, impressive shower sightings took place in 1922 in Greece, 1945 in Japan, and 1982 in the United States.

Art Bell, the creator of "Coast to Coast AM," passed away on today's date four years ago. Called the "mysterious narrator of the American nightscape" by the Washington Post, he is truly missed. Pictured is an honorary memorial plaque placed in a park in Pahrump, Nevada, the town where Art famously conducted many of his broadcasts from his desert compound in the "Kingdom of Nye."

In Egyptian hieroglyphs, a cartouche /kɑːrˈtuːʃ/ is an oval with a line at one end tangent to the oval, indicating that the text enclosed is a royal name.[1] The first examples of the cartouche are associated with pharaohs at the end of the Third Dynasty, but the feature did not come into common use until the beginning of the Fourth Dynasty under Pharaoh Sneferu. While the cartouche is usually vertical with a horizontal line, if it makes the name fit better it can be horizontal, with a vertical line at the end (in the direction of reading). The ancient Egyptian word for cartouche was shenu, and the cartouche was essentially an expanded shen ring. Demotic script reduced the cartouche to a pair of brackets and a vertical line.
