NASA’s 'Astronomy Picture of the Day' Recognized for Decades of Outreach

On June 16, 1995, when the World Wide Web was young, two gamma-ray astronomers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, launched a website with a simple aim – to post a daily astronomical image along with a brief, easily understood explanation.

Twenty-seven years on, Astronomy Picture of the Day (known affectionately as APOD) is available in 20 languages, seen by millions each day, and is used in classrooms throughout the world. APOD has now been honored in the International Astronomical Union’s first-ever round of outreach prizes. The award will be presented at the IAU General Assembly in Busan, South Korea, in August.

“APOD is a gem in the crown of astronomy outreach that continues to raise awareness of astronomy and space science,” said Mark Clampin, the director of Goddard’s Sciences and Exploration Directorate. “It is truly a fixture in the daily routines of millions of people.”

APOD founders Jerry Bonnell, working at the University of Maryland, College Park and Goddard, and Robert Nemiroff, now at Michigan Technological University, hit on the idea while brainstorming how they might contribute to the growing web.

“We realized NASA had an incredible archive of images from astronomy and solar system exploration missions,” explained Bonnell. “We started with those but invited basically anyone with a camera to contribute. The individual amateur contributions really took off and are a mainstay of APOD after all these years. Posting one astronomy picture a day and a simple explanation really became a labor of love.”

Biggest Freshwater Fish Ever Caught is a Stingray Weighing as Much as a Polar Bear



It looks like a really, really big pancake

A fisherman in Cambodia snagged the rights to a true fish tale last week, landing what turned out to be the largest freshwater fish ever caught. 

The giant freshwater stingray (Urogymnus polylepis) is more than 13 feet (4 meters) long and weighed in at a whopping 661 pounds (299.8 kilograms). Despite its massive bulk, little is known about this species of stingray's habits and behavior in the wild. Scientists tagged and released the record-breaker in order to learn more about its migration patterns and preferred habitats. 

The flapjack-shaped find has now secured the status of the giant freshwater stingray as the largest known fish in the world, nudging out the Mekong giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas), the largest of which was a 646-pound (293 kg) specimen caught in Thailand in 2005. 

It was caught on June 13 by a fisher named Moul Thun in the Stung Treng province in northeastern Cambodia, according to NBC. The next morning, Thun called in researchers from the conservation organization Wonders of Mekong, which has been working to record and protect giant stingrays in the waterway.

This is the third giant stingray catch-and-release of the last two months, according to NBC. All three stingrays, including a 397-pounder (180 kg) caught in May, were female, raising the possibility that this stretch of river might be a nursery where stingrays go to lay eggs and raise young. 

Wonders of Mekong pays fishers market price for their released catches. The researchers also tagged this stingray with an acoustic transmitter that will help the scientists keep tabs on the monster fish for a full year.

Amazing Flaky Martian Rocks Were Formed in a Stream or Small Pond





Since 2012, NASA’s Curiosity rover has been exploring the Gale Crater for clues about Mars’ past and possible evidence that it once supported life. For the past year, this search has centered on the lower levels of Mount Sharp, a transitional zone between a clay-rich region and one filled with sulfates (a type of mineral salt).

These regions can offer insight into Mars’ warm, watery past, but the transition zone between them is also of scientific value. In short, the study of this region may provide a record of the major climatic shift that took place billions of years ago on Mars.

For example, this region has unique geological features that include clay minerals that appear as flaky layers of sedimentary rock. One in particular, “The Prow,” was recently imaged by Curiosity and had the mission science teams buzzing. These features formed when water still flowed into the Gale Crater, depositing sediment at the base of Mount Sharp. Higher on the mountain, the hill was likely covered in wind-swept dunes that hardened into rock over time. In between them is where the flaky layers formed, possibly as a result of small ponds or streams that wove them among the dunes.

I get notifications from PG&E to let me know they would be inspecting the transmission lines either with helicopters or drones. I watched the video in full screen and a few times you can tell it is a drone. It looked nothing like the UFO we saw out over the ocean a few years ago.
