I have no doubt that placing security tags on food in supermarkets is going to be on the increase, and civil unrest will be on the increase in general from here on too.
That said for fairness the places in England that have been mentioned are areas with high 'past' crime levels (e.g. Wolverhampton 125 crimes per 1000 people), and Streatham (95 crimes per 1000 people) so they are the first areas to worsen...and implement these precautions.
No doubt it will spread to other UK towns & areas as time passes, but we're not there just yet.

I'll be honest having witnessed the everyday crimes freely committed in South London for the past two decades (not simply in recent years), I believe the crime figures there have always been down played and under-reported, so Streatham (one of the places reported for increased cheese crime ) and surrounding areas will probably increase quickly in the uptake of these security precautions.

From what I saw from the two covid years I spent on the shop floor, that won't make any difference. You can buy devices on Ebay for removing the alcohol security tags, the wire tags they just cut off, and the sticky ones they peel off. I found loads of security tags dumped behind other produce, especially around Valentine's Day, Easter and Christmas. People also pick up something like a sandwich or a muffin, eat it round the store and dump the crumb-laden wrapper. This is a well-off area too, I can't imagine what it's like in inner cities.

The amateurs will get caught, but the pros will continue to get away with it. That cuts into supermarkets' profits and we all end up with higher prices.

I'm with you on your comment; yes, nicking will be on the increase, as will civil unrest.

Edit with a PS - I saw two women walking out of the store last week with a large bag (and I mean really large), with a load of kids' toys poking out of it. Two staff ran after them telling them to pay for them, and they said they were going to pay at the kiosk. They were ordered over to the tills but wouldn't budge so the staff took the bag to the tills. They stood there complaining loudly but when the staff were out of sight they scarpered!

I like Katie and often enjoy her rants, but I feel it'll take far more than security tags on cheese, food and energy price hikes etc, to get the UK collective off their backsides and onto the streets. I really feel we have become so dumbed down as a nation that it wont happen. The trouble is that we don't have a collective national identity to rally behind - like France, for example, who have 'fighting back' in their DNA, thanks to their historical hatred and demolition of the ruling classes, to name just one nation. Our govt has (deliberately) allowed mass immigration into our country for many years and this has the effect of diluting any sense of National Unity. The incomers - millions of them, are hardly going to bite the hand that feeds them are they?

No, I feel it will not happen until a substantial portion of us come to realise that... after they've taken everything away (our homes, bank savings, via their Bail-Ins, frozen our bank accounts because we aren't 'good' citizens, to name many of the things they will do to us, via the coming Chinese style communist system) that we will have absolutely nothing left to lose. Then - just watch a traumatised (not simply pissed off) populace take to the streets. When people realise they have nothing left to lose, they come to know a sense of freedom and liberation that is incredibly empowering. That wont happen just yet, but it's on the cards.

Yep, I'd love if everyone "kicked off", to remind those in power that they are representatives of the publics' wishes, not their own.
I wish we would all protest.

I often look at the French with total envy, as they always have the guts to protest in the streets.

I guess it only takes a few to protest to provide the spirit for others to follow.

Somehow as someone born in England, I look upon the Country and believe it's "uncivilised" to dare to protest.

I like to believe I am a free thinker, as all my life I seem to disagree with most of society, yet protesting is the one line in the sand I find hard to cross.
Gosh what an idiot... when I know it is wrong at this point to kowtow to everything going on, but can't break free of that mentality.

Having had an interest in what happens across the Channel, and having lived in Italy for a while, I have come to the conclusion that Britons are a lot more dumbed-down. Of course the French and Italians do take an interest in celebs and popular culture, but they are also more interested in politics and current affairs than the British generally are. Celebrity culture has taken a far greater hold on the populace here.

However, I did take heart at following the huge Corona protests in British cities, they did us proud. All is not lost.

Living in London, I can 'feel' the underlying daily tension here, which has little to do with the ongoing downward trend brought about by our government. Routine knife crime, now highlighted by the odd shooting, typfies our days here in the City.
Nevertheless, it's all linked to the lamentable inability of successive governments to address any of the public concerns, whatever they may be.

The Professor thinks we're in phase 1 right now, and cites the overreach by politicians after the Brexit result as being the moment he sat up and first noted this trend.

Re fertilizer, at least on the small scale of home gardening, I recently found a YT vid that said Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulfate) is good. Not a Nitrogen supplement (Urea) though.
